Tete-a-Tete: Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre

Tete-a-Tete: Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre

by Hazel Rowley

They are one of the world's legendary couples. We cannot think of one without thinking of the other. Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre: passionate, freethinking existentialist philosopher-writers who had a committed but notoriously open union that generated no end of controversy. With Tête-à-Tête distinguished biographer Hazel Rowley offers the first dual portrait of these two colossal figures and their intense, often embattled relationship. They were brilliant, courageous, profoundly innovative individuals, and Tête-à-Tête shows the passion, energy, daring, humor, and contradictions of their remarkable, unorthodox relationship. The impact of their writings on modern thought cannot be overestimated, but de Beauvoir and Sartre are remembered just as much for the lives they led. Through interviews and access to new primary sources, Rowley portrays them up close, in their most intimate moments. Theirs is a great story, and a great story is precisely what Beauvoir and Sartre most wanted their lives to be.

Hazel Rowley's book Christina Stead: A Biography won the National Book Award for nonfiction (Australia's equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize) and was shortlisted for every literary prize in the country. In 2001, while affiliated with the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Studies at Harvard, Rowley released Richard Wright: The Life and Times, which was listed among the Washington Post Book World Raves.
