The House of the Seven Gables

When ruthless Colonel Pyncheon acquired the land for his pretentious house by a false accusation of witchcraft, the condemned man curses Pyncheon and all his family. By the time of the story, the curse has blighted the Colonel's descendants, and Hepzibah Pyncheon is reduced to taking in lodgers. Such is the scene into which innocent Phoebe Pyncheon, a country cousin, walks. When she and the lodger, Holgrave (who is a descendent of the original landowner) fall in love, it remains to be seen whether the ancient family guilt will destroy their happiness. In The House of the Seven Gables, fantasy and the thrill of the supernatural combine with Hawthorne's descriptive virtuosity to make this a rich and compelling classic. It is performed here by Oscar-nominated actress, Joan Allen.

F. Scott Fitzgerald Audiobooks

F. Scott Fitzgerald, who is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, is the author of many novels and short stories. The writer was born to an upper middle class American family on September 24, 1896. In the 1920s, Fitzgerald traveled to Europe where he established a close friendship with fellow writer Ernest Hemingway.

It was during that time, also known as the Jazz Age, that Fitzgerald produced his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. However, it wasn't until after the author's death in 1940 that The Great Gatsby was recognized as one of the great American novels. Fitzgerald's only commercial success came from This Side of Paradise, his first novel. His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned, is believed by many to be based on his marriage to Zelda Fitzgerald. In the author's later years, he worked in Hollywood producing commercial short stories and his final novel, The Last Tycoon, wasn't published until after his death at the age of 44.

If you love short stories, try Fitzgerald's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Tales, which is available as a download. The author's second novel, The Beautiful and Damned is also available as an audio download. If you're interested in the timeless classic, The Great Gatsby it is conveniently offered in audiobook on CD and MP3 download formats.
