Lance Armstrong
Biography
After overcoming incredible odds, Lance Armstrong has become one of the most successful cycling athletes in the history of American Professional Racing. Born in 1971, this Plano, Texas native began his career in high school, where his talent for cycling was apparent from an early age. After competing in the Olympics, and finally gaining his first major victory in the world Road championships in Oslo, Norway, Armstrong went pro in 1992.
A thriving professional career was almost stopped permanently in 1996, when Armstrong was diagnosed with a cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs. A rigorous chemotherapy regime put his cancer in remission, and by 1999, no one could have predicted what he was able to accomplish. Starting that year, Armstrong and his team have gone on to win the Tour de France for seven consecutive races. This unparalleled accomplishment has led to Armstrong's recent announcement that he will be leaving the world of professional cycling to devote more time to his family.
Armstrong is possibly one of the most visible sports figures currently living, and has topped the best seller’s lists with autobiographical books that detail the determination it took to come back from cancer. He is also an outspoken advocate of cancer research, and has devoted much of his time and financial resources to spreading awareness on the need to stamp out the disease. LearnOutLoud.com has found a great selection of Lance Armstrong audio books, and various spoken word resources that will help you learn more from this remarkable man.
We Recommend
For Audio Book listeners, the very first place to begin with Lance Armstrong is his best-selling autobiography "It's Not About the Bike". In this highly inspirational memoir, Armstrong tells the tale of how he was almost struck down in the prime of his career by cancer, how he found the determination within himself to continue cycling and how all of this finally led to a redemptive victory at the 1999 Tour-de-France. If you want the epitome of a comeback story, told by the man that lived it, you won't find a better audio book than this. Next we recommend It's Not the Bike's follow up, "Every Second Counts". Here Armstrong talks about his personal life, the challenges he faced after surviving a bleak cancer prognosis and his sometimes contentious relationship with the French. You will also find more about Lance's most recent achievements, and the battle he waged with those that accused him of drug abuse. In this audio book, Armstrong goes further in proving himself as one of the great survivors in the history of any sport. LearnOutLoud.com is also excited to feature two new Podcasts, Lance in France and Chasing Lance at the Tour, both of which detail the day to day events in Armstrong's final bid at winning the Tour-de-France.
