The Scarlet Letter is one of the great classics of American literature. Set in the harsh Puritan environment of the 17th century Boston, it describes the plight of Hester Prynne, an independent-minded woman who stands alone against society. Having given birth to a child after an illicit affair she refuses to name the father and is forced to wear the letter A for Adulteress embroidered on her dress.

Even though times have changed and our society is very different from that of the Puritans in the colony of Massachusetts, I think we can still relate very well to these characters and appreciate their struggles with guilt and ostracism. Even though most of the "action" takes place at the very end, the vivid imagery and curious/brilliant language Hawthorne uses throughout the story keeps me fascinated from beginning to end. I think the music used in the audio book is perfect for setting the right mood.
