Frank Herbert is the author of the best-selling science fiction novel of all time Dune and its five sequels: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. In this talk delivered at UCLA in 1985 about a year before his death, Herbert touches upon a number of the themes in his Dune saga. He starts by telling a story from history of how experts were brought in to predict the future during Franklin Roosevelt's first years as president and their predictions for the next 15 years were entirely wrong. Herbert suggests that any charismatic leader or powerful government that tries to tell you with certitude what will happen in the future is lying to you. He goes on to discuss his ideas on ecology, politics, drug policy, science, and more. He also provides advice for anyone seeking a career along with some ideas for aspiring writers. The second half of the talk is devoted to answering questions from the UCLA audience. It's enjoyable to hear directly from this giant of science fiction literature. Note that there are some unfortunate split second skips in the audio recording.
