Joan Didion gave a raw account of her husband John Dunne's death and the year of grieving she went through after in her 2005 book The Year of Magical Thinking. In this interview with Terry Gross, Didion opens up about the book and the grieving of her late husband and her daughter Quintana, who died months before this interview at the age of 39. Didion talks about her marriage to Dunne at the age of 29 and how she didn't know life apart from her husband, and had to learn to be alone afterwards. Didion also provides her thoughts about God and the afterlife. Near the end of the interview, Didion breaks down a little as the grief is too near. Gross attempts to comfort her by announcing to her that she'd just been nominated for the National Book Award. The Year of Magical Thinking would go on to win the 2005 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
