Maya Angelou joins Studs Terkel for an interview on her 1969 memoir
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
. Angelou tells stories from the book with vivid recollections of places and people she grew up with. Growing up in Stamps, Arkansas, she talks about being raised by her grandmother and uncle. She speaks of the hope that African-Americans incorporated into their music at the time in the South, and how she came up with the title for her book. She relates stories from her life in St. Louis and San Francisco, where she became the first black female cable car conductor. There's much humor in the book and in this interview with Studs. This was the first of seven autobiographies that Angelou would write in her lifetime.
