Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools (with its emphasis on great men in high places) to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace.

Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, Zinn's A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of, and in the words of, its women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers. Here we learn that many of our country's greatest battles (labor laws, women's rights, racial equality) were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance.

Revised and updated with new chapters on Clinton's presidency, the 2000 Election, and the "War on Terrorism," A People's History of the United States features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history.

One of the Most Pernicious of the Revionist 'History' Books.

I have read this book in print. Mr. Zinn writes with an agenda, one he doesn't even bother to try to hide. His history is highly selective, purposefully leaves out important context and, worst of all, some of the information he presents in not just flawed by one of the above - sometimes they are outright falsehoods masquerading as 'facts.' The study of history has been a lifelong pursuit of mine, and I took degrees in it at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
I read this book as it was recommended to me. I was appalled. I knew immediately that he removed all context from many of his 'histories,' and was confused by other parts - information I'd never heard before. A little bit of research revealed to me that the vast majority of these were... mistaken (a less strong word than lies).
This book will have no effect upon me, but it is frightening to think what damage this book could have on those without my background in history.
In short, stay far away from this title. It is utter rubbish - and dangerous rubbish at that. The greatest danger of these books is that they fall into the hands of impressionable youth. The goal of the book seems to be to paint the USA, and more broadly Europeans in the Western Hemisphere, as uniquely evil mean & women. It is social poison and should be avoided by everyone with the possible exception of those with both maturity and a firm grasp of history.
