LearnOutLoud.com Review
Historian Niall Ferguson joins Conversations with History host Harry Kreisler for an hour-long conversation on Ferguson's 2006 book
The War of the World
and its accompanying TV series
The War of the World: A New History of the 20th Century
. In the book, Ferguson sets out to answer the question of why humans made the 20th century such a violent century. He focuses on the roles of ethnic conflict, economic volatility, and the decline of empires as the reasons that such violence broke out in many parts of the world. He particularly discusses the rise of Nazi Germany in relation to these causes of violence. Recorded in 2006 while the Iraq War was going on, Ferguson cautions against terms like Islamofascism in comparing Middle East Islamist movements to Nazi Germany.
