In Fanatics and Fools, political pundit Arianna Huffington reveals everything we need to know about the dirty game of Washington politics. She poses key questions: How did self-righteous Republican zealots gain control of our government? How did they obliterate Democrats and shift politics so far to the right? Why have they been allowed to redefine the right and betray true American democratic values?

Huffington takes on a long view of American political history and leadership to remind us that at one time America's leaders were people of daring, passion, and intelligence. By contrast, today's leaders (people like Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft, Tom DeLay, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Bill Frist) are "dangerous Fanatics". Those who don't oppose them are "spineless Fools". Huffington holds the feet of the Fanatics and Fools to the fire while offering us a blueprint for returning power to this country's rightful owners: the people.

Arianna Huffington provides a clear, well-rounded platform for John Kerry and the Democrats to take in order to win in November. I may be wrong but I think that Kerry adopted the 10-Year Independence from Foreign Oil plan that she lays out in this book. Huffington is a compassionate liberal who sincerely cares about the harm done to America through Bush’s policies. She tries to cover maybe too much ground in the book, and uses an awful lot of numbers to back up her claims at how the country is worse off than it was four years ago. She does discuss her own bid for governor of California and talks about how Arnold copied the campaign of Bush in order to take the governor seat and is now using Bush’s policies to govern (this was interesting to me because I’m a CA resident). Huffington is at her best when attacking the Democrats for how soft and indecisive they’ve become while the Republicans have taken leaps and bounds to help benefit the rich and disregard the future of the poor and middle classes. Her ideas (which she lays out in a series of speeches) are a clear, positive, and pro-active alternative to the Republican agenda. Her Grecian accent is a little thick and hard to understand at times and her sense of humor isn’t quite as riotous as Michael Moore’s, but Huffington is an excellent voice for the progressive movement in America.
