This 2003 documentary by the great German filmmaker Werner Herzog covers the largest Buddhist ritual in Bodh Gaya, India which is the site of the Bodhi tree where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. This Kalachakra or "wheel of time" initiation was presided over by the Dalai Lama in 2002 and Werner Herzog was given an opportunity to interview him. Herzog also provides his signature narration over the rest of the film covering many Tibetan Buddhist rituals along the way including a pilgrimage at Mount Kailash. The Dalai Lama fell ill in India, but later that year a second Kalachakra was held in Graz, Austria which he presided over, and Herzog documents the event. The film contains beautiful music and imagery including the creation of the elaborate Kalachakra sand mandala.
