Lawrence Wright is the author of the 2013 book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief. In this interview with Fresh Air, Wright focuses on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard was born in 1911 and passed in 1986. Wright talks about some of the key moments in Hubbard's life, which ultimately led him to write the bestselling 1950 self-help book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and deciding to form the Church of Scientology in 1952. After much legal pressure on Scientology, Hubbard went into seclusion until his death. Wright also briefly outlines in this interview some of the principles of Scientology. At the end of the interview, Terry Gross asks Wright to respond to the Church of Scientology's denouncements of the book. It's an informative interview on Hubbard's life with this Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
