Description

In chapters such as "During Your Swing Is Not the Time to Give Yourself a Lesson", "Isn't Where You Have to Play It From Punishment Enough?" and "How to Enjoy a Bad Round of Golf," the author guides golfers with simple yet powerful techniques to prepare for, execute, and, equally important, respond to the results of any golf shot. The author, Dr. Joseph Parent, is a PGA Tour Instructor who draws on his teaching experience to offer special methods that have led to amazing improvements in the games of professionals and amateurs alike.

Zen Golf offers a fresh perspective for golf and for life. Rather than focus on what's wrong with us (what's broken, flawed, or missing) we can take the attitude that there is something fundamentally, essentially right with us. Through mindful awareness, distractions and negativity can be recognized and cleared away.

Clear, concise, and enlightening, Zen Golf introduces a unique combination of modern psychology, Buddhist wisdom, and professional golf instruction. By applying classic insights and stories to the challenges of golf, Zen Golf shows you how to make your mind an ally instead of an enemy: how to stay calm, clear the interference that leads to poor shots, and eliminate bad habits and mental mistakes. Zen Golf shapes ancient philosophies into new teachings, leading golfers to the effortless focus and unconditional confidence of being in "the zone."

General Content: There are an increasing number of books about the mental game of golf. However, few of them have a lot of substantial or revolutionary content. While much of the content of Zen Golf is familiar (stay in the present, don’t fix your swing on the course, etc.) there is enough good stuff in here to make it a worthwhile listen. The intermixing of Zen parables and wisdom with solid advice about the mental side of golf make this audio title both enlightening and entertaining.

Having said this, this might be a title you would be advised to pick up in print versus on audio. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, there are a number of exercises in the book that you’ll want to refer back to. This is quite difficult to do with an audio version. Furthermore, some of the exercises require you to close your eyes or require some type of movement. Of course this is difficult to do if you are listening in your car and therefore will somewhat minimize the benefits you’ll receive. The book is a solid one and only the format is a limitation. If you have the time to read it, that’s ideal. If not, you’ll still enjoy listening to this one.

Audio-Specific Content: I listened to what I think was the unabridged (4 hours and 51 minutes in length) version of this title through Audible.com. The reason I say “I think” is because at the end of the book mention is made that this recording was of “selected chapters” of Zen Golf. This leads me to believe that perhaps this was actually an abridged version of the book. This version is read by the author who did an excellent job. Overall, the title is very listenable.
