Description

In studying western drama we have to accommodate to the fact that after Aeschylus it's all down hill. The enormity of Aeschylus' tragic vision has been approached but never equaled in western drama. There are, though, cultures in for example 16th and 17th century European drama when the dramatists explored some of the most profound questions similar to the ones initiated by the first tragedian, and by playwrights in the 19th and 20th century who frequently divorce themselves from the conventional assumptions of their own historical moments in society. The engagement and non-engagement of dramatic literature with its own time is a fascinating story of the contribution of an art form to the understanding and contemplation of the human condition.
