Listen to Henry James' classic Victorian ghost story of a governess and the children she cares for as the deal with the mysterious spirits of their estate. The ambiguous nature of the novel has kept literary critics guessing its meanings for over a century. This spellbinding tale is narrated by Elizabeth Klett over at LibriVox.org and is available on MP3 download.

While the sensual tones of this reader's voice seem to lend themselves more appropriately to a late-night call-in line, she is articulate enough with pronunciation. However, it is obvious she has never read this novella. She attempts to imbue every single line with mystery and "spooky." Unfortunately she misses some proper pausing and inflection. Her tone, indeed, attempts to revise the flow of the novella in a manner less than conducive to understanding the plot.

Hard to understand

This kind of Victorian/turn-of-the-century English writing has a certain cadence best understood by reading Jane Austen or Oscar Wilde. Without understanding this cadence, the long sentences can become very confusing. This reader, while her voice is very smooth, obviously does not have an ear for the English accents or tones that would make Henry James pleasant to listen to, and her bad breaks and pauses in the reading make it so hard to follow that it becomes a chore listening to an otherwise intriguing story. I am grateful, however, that this story is available online for free, and hope that in the future Ms. Doolin spends some time in England.
