Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged (2011) Documentary on Free Online Video

Though it was lambasted by critics when first published, Ayn Rand's magnum opus novel Atlas Shrugged has only risen in popularity over the last 50 years, due in part to the political and philosophical elements at play in the book. This documentary traces Rand's early life in communist Russia, her life as a writer in America, and how she developed a philosophy that extolled rational self-interest, unrestricted capitalism, and the preservation of the individual. Fearing that America in the post-war era might slip into a socialist system, Rand created characters and scenarios in her book that would romanticize and praise human ingenuity as the force that must overcome an encroaching welfare state run by a talentless banking elite. This message has struck a chord with many young people and free-market advocates that see her book as a warning against state-dominated economics in 21st century America.
