Give Undocumented Immigrants a Path to Citizenship Debate

With the U.S. elections less than a week away, check out this brand new debate from Intelligence Squared on the hot button issue of immigration. In the debate the two sides argue over whether the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States should have a path to U.S. citizenship. The side arguing for the motion emphasizes that the average time an undocumented immigrant has been living in the United States has been over 10 years and that deportation would tear families apart which are often composed of legal and illegal immigrants. They point out immigrantsвЂ™ contributions to the U.S. economy in terms of labor and paying taxes including sales tax and often income tax. The side arguing against the motion suggests that the costs of the benefits undocumented immigrants receive outweigh the taxes they pay, and that they are taking away jobs from poor, lesser educated American workers. They argue that giving citizenship to all illegal immigrants is a radical solution and would only encourage millions more to enter the U.S. illegally. The two sides do come to some interesting agreements and feel that it is high time to update the U.S. immigration laws which havenвЂ™t changed significantly in the past 25 years. As is usual with Intelligence Squared, it is a very civilized and informed debate.
