In this Fresh Air interview, biologist Robert Sapolsky explains many of the findings from his best-selling book Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers: The Guide to Stress, Stress-Related Diseases, and Coping. While other animals in the animal kingdom have a relatively easy time turning off the stress response after a perceived threat, humans have a pernicious inclination to chronic psychological stress. This long-term stress can lead to all sorts of stress-related diseases that affect the body and brain. He talks about what the stress response turns off in humans and what hormones are related to stress. At the end of the interview, Sapolsky discusses an unrelated article that he wrote that deals with why trying novel things tends to decrease with age.
