In this lecture delivered at the Long Now Foundation, eclectic author Steven Johnson talks about viewing the world from the "long zoom" perspective where we zoom out from specific issues to try and see overall trends. He talks about his book The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic - and How it Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World. In the book he talks about Dr. John Snow, who in 1854 created a map of the cholera cases and by examining the map was able determine the cause of the outbreak. He talks about many other areas where "zooming out" can be useful, drawing on ideas from his other books.
