In many cases, it may surprise people to learn that the most successful people come from improbable circumstances. In her book, The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery, author Sarah Lewis has studied the lives of many of the world's most successful leaders, artists and writers, providing a fresh take on the role failure has in determining creative breakthroughs. As she says in this lecture provided by WGBH, many of the world's greatest artists, including Michelangelo, left much of their work either unfinished or unsigned, leading her to conclude that there is a certain perfectionism that fuels great art. This and other interesting insights have led her to investigate the relationship between perseverance, dissatisfaction, and personal excellence.
