Dr. Timothy L. Verduin discusses Parenting Your Strong-Willed Preschooler in an interview at NYU Medical Center. This program is part of FORA.tv's NYU Medical Center Wellness Series.

Dr. Verduin, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist at the Institute for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders at the NYU Child Study Center. He focuses on understanding and managing misbehavior, tantrums, and non-compliance in young children. In this interview, Dr. Verduin discusses two aspects of effective parenting: positive attention and clear expectations and consequences. He believes these two concepts lie at the heart of most research-supported parenting programs.

Dr. Verduin covers how and why parents should give positive attention for the 'good' behaviors their children are already exhibiting. He also discusses how and when positive attention should be withdrawn temporarily, through a technique known as active ignoring. He emphasizes how this pattern of responding to misbehavior not only improves child behavior but also strengthens the parent-child relationship.

Dr. Verduin believes parents must also be skilled at making expectations clear, setting appropriate limits, and following through with fair, consistent consequences when necessary. He discusses the importance of setting up children for success by giving good directions (e.g., directions that take the child's developmental level into account). He also reinforces the importance of giving fair consequences in an even, controlled manner so as not to provide stimulating, negative attention for misbehavior.

Dealing with That Strong Will

Parenting a strong-willed child can be a really demanding job for parents. In many cases, the American parents tend to highlight the negative attitudes of the children more than praising their positive behavior which may sporadically occur. This infuriates the child’s spirits further and the level of stubbornness is bound to increase. It also may help if the negative behavior is paid minimum heed and the slightest hint of positivity is attended to immediately. Keeping this trend also helps the child come up with more positive behavior as it perceives the appreciation much more as compared to, say, a scolding. In addition, exerting less pressure academically on the child would also result in better familial relationships post their attainment of adulthood – a scenario which is clearly seen disrupted in the present American society. This video is surely beneficial for all those parents who might be frustrated with their child’s behavior; it has all the insights relating to better parenting a strong-willed/ADHD child.
