Conceptions of love and marriage are at the heart of the political debate over "values." Stephanie Coontz, director of research and public education for the Council on Contemporary Families, describes the dramatic shift in many countries and cultures in their views of the emotional, social, economic and legal consequences of a couple's decision to enter into a formal and binding union. In her telling, the "love-based marriage" is a relative novelty. She will sign copies of Marriage, A History: From Obedience to Intimacy, Or How Love Conquered Marriage following her Forum.

This is a wonderful lecture. Not only is the content of great value and timely, but the speaker has a wonderful speaking voice as well as a delightful way to take in all of this information. Thanks go not only to Stephanie Coontz for delivering this lecture based on her extensive research, but also to the Miller Center for digitizing this lecture.

I was so pleasantly surprised to receive the link to this trough Learn Out Loud. My Great Books Discussion group this week is reading The Darling, by Chekhov. This lecture will be something to share with my classmates. Thanks
