Free Resource (#499) - February 19th, 2008
Today's Resource of the Day

Authors@Google: John Searle

In a thought-provoking lecture provided by Authors@Google on streaming video, philosopher John Searle discusses the perennial problem of human free will. Starting with the historical arguments associated with free will, Searle then points viewers to how quantum mechanical theories of a chaotic and ultimately indeterminate universe may provide some solution to the problem. Delivered with a sense of fun and respect for the novice, Searle's lecture is a must for anyone that wonders about the full nature of human choice and whether or not any of our decisions can truly be considered our own. It is available on streaming video through YouTube.

Mill's On Liberty

Mill's thinking about freedom in civic and social life examines fundamental principles shared among conservative, liberal, and radical politicians. The life of true philosophy stands outside the political battles that are rampant in society and seeks the political wisdom that is necessary for a good life in any age. Mill's philosophical presentation and analysis of those principles stand alongside the reflections of Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Plato Out Loud

To understand western philosophy you must begin with Plato and his teacher Socrates. As Alfred North Whitehead said, "The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato." Through the many Socratic Dialogues which Plato wrote and Plato's Republic we come to know his theory of the forms embodied in the true, the good, and the beautiful. We hear Plato's political philosophies regarding the three forms of government: aristocracy, democracy, and monarchy. And in the end we are not left with a dogmatic philosophy that we should follow, but rather a Socratic method of questioning and the familiar quotation: "An unexamined life is not worth living." LearnOutLoud.com has created this resource of Plato's works on audio, along with audio books and courses about Plato and Socrates.
