Neal Stephenson: Science Fiction as a Literary Genre

Cutting edge science fiction writer Neal Stephenson attempts to assess SF as legitimate literature in this lecture from Gresham College. Beginning with an interesting dissection of how genre itself has splintered and found separate niches within various popular entertainment mediums, he then illustrates how SF in particular has settled into itself as "idea porn" for a generally intelligent readership. In the end Stephenson claims that science fiction fans exemplify a societal trend towards knowledge specification; a world where everyone is a genius (or geek) in one specific area. The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time

Rescued from his beloved Macintosh, The Salmon of Doubt provides us with the opportunity to linger and frolic one last time in the uniquely entertaining and richly formative mind of Douglas Adams. For the millions of readers who expressed their grief and shock at his untimely death in May 2001, this is it: his final book and our last chance to see new work from an acknowledged comic genius.

This work includes the title novella; essays on subjects near and dear to his heart, including perception, computers, and Bach's Brandenburg concertos; laugh-out-loud short pieces; and transcripts of Hitchhikers Guide to the Future radio scripts. One last glimpse of Douglas Adams before we go.
