Neil deGrasse Tyson: The Pluto Files

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson discusses his newest book on Pluto's recent demotion in this humorous interview conducted at the Los Angeles Public Library. In a style all his own, Tyson describes the uproar created when he helped demote Pluto to a new class of planetoid, even going as far as to cite letters from school children decrying his stance. He also goes on to answer many pressing (and not so pressing) scientific questions; including the role science has played in the Bush administration, and whether or not the world will end in 2012. This talk is available on streaming video from FORA.tv.

Astronomy: The Heavenly Challenge

As optics improved, man began to see the solar system. Tycho Brahe in Denmark, Nicolaus Copernicus of Poland, Johannes Kepler of Germany, and Italy's Galileo all began to see a new relationship between the world and the stars. Their questions, and their non-religious answers, toppled the idea that man and the Church are at the center of the universe. The Science and Discovery series recreates history's four-thousand-year journey of scientific progress. Science has often challenged and upset conventional wisdom. This is a story of vested interests and independent thinkers, experiments and theories, change and progress. Aristotle, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Einstein all make appearances.

Stephen Hawking Audio Books

Biography
Born in 1942, Stephen W. Hawking is the foremost theoretical physicist of his generation. After gaining his Ph.D. in Cosmology from Cambridge, he began work on the basic laws which govern the universe. Among other accomplishments, he has shown that Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These results indicated it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory, the other great scientific development of the first half of the 20th Century.

In spite of being severely disabled by Motor Neurone Disease, he is highly active in physics, writing, and public life. His two major books available on audio, A Brief History Of Time and The Theory of Everything have remained highly popular all over the world and are now classic best-sellers. Anyone interested in the universe, cosmos, and how it all began can listen to them: no previous knowledge in this field is required to enjoy these audio books.

We Recommend
The first of classic by Stephen Hawking is A Brief History Of Time. This landmark book on audio is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. And you may want to check out the sequel to that book which attempts to clarify Hawking's ideas even further in A Briefer History of Time.

The second is The Theory of Everything, in which Hawking brings listeners to the cutting edge of theoretical physics. It is in this realm that truth is often stranger than fiction. Nevertheless, Hawking is tireless in making the principles that control the universe interesting and understandable to everyone.

For more there's The Grand Design written by Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow which tackles some of the biggest questions about our universe. All of these audio books are great introductions to not only Hawking's theories, but also theoretical physics in general.

Whether you are a practicing scientist or someone that doesn't know anything at all but is nevertheless interested, LearnOutLoud.com can provide the best place to learn about Hawking's theories of well, everything!
