William Cody Audio

Medal of Honor winner William Frederick Cody was born February 26th, 1846, and died January 10th, 1917. His career was started as a young boy, after witnessing the murder of his Quaker father. He briefly held numerous jobs, including trapper, miner, and hotelier, but settled on a career as a Scout for the U.S. Army. He received his famous nickname "Buffalo Bill" after winning a bison shooting contest against the buffalo hunter William Comstock. At the end of his life, he operated the world famous "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World", which featured such notable names as Sitting Bull and Annie Oakley.
