Zaadz Notes: Marcus Aurelius

Zaadz Notes: Marcus Aurelius

by Brian Johnson

Marcus Aurelius

Not only is Marcus Aurelius one of my heroes, he's also one of history's leading Stoic Philosophers.

Stoic philosophy. You know, one of the classic Hellenistic philosophies—right there with Epicureanism and Cynicism.

Huh?

Whether or not you’ve heard of Stoicism, you’ve met one of its leading thinkers: Marcus Aurelius—he’s the old emperor in the movie Gladiator.

You remember the four noble virtues, right? Wisdom, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance. (versus the “other virtues” that Commodus prided himself in, of course.)

With that, I invite you to enjoy a quick look at one of my favorite philosophers.

The Zaadz Notes are a series of essays written and read by Brian Johnson, Philosopher and CEO of Zaadz, Inc. Each Note features wisdom about a concept or teacher that will educate and inspire you. The podcast seemed boring to begin with, however, I'm glad I listened to it in its' entirety. Inspirational and meaningful quotes stated by great speaker, Brian Johnson.

'Zaadz Notes: Marcus Aurelius' is an introduction to the Greek stoic philosopher and fourteenth Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Written and presented by Brian Johnson and published by LearnOutLoud, these notes are divided into roughly four sections- his major work, Stoicism, historical context and his life.
We are told that Aurelius's major work is titled 'The Meditations". It was merely a series of journal entries by the future king, and was not meant for publication. Next, the narrator explains the origins and span of the Stoic philosophy and the historical background to the empire Aurelius ruled. Finally, he tells us about his life, and we are told that Marcus Aurelius was probably the closest thing to Plato's ideal "philosopher king".

I like Brian Johnson's conversational and friendly tone of voice, and especially the personal touch he gives at places. For example, he tells us that Marcus Aurelius is one of his favorite philosophers, and that he was inspired by an exhibit at Budapest to read his major work. A slight glitch in the audio quality- it skips a few seconds at one place in between- doesn't, however, take away from the fact that this is a great introduction to Marcus Aurelius.
