Socrates
Socrates, Socrates, Socrates.
Socrates is best known for two words: "Know thyself."His command takes on more significance when you understand one of the most important values in Greek culture: areté. Translated as "virtue," the word actually means something closer to "being the best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential."

'Socrates' is an audio title published by LearnOutLoud and Brian Johnson, philosopher and CEO of Zaadz,Inc. It gives the listener an overview of Socrates' life and teachings. Divided into roughly four parts- his major work, historical context, life and teachings, and some quotes, this nine-minute long audio title encapsulates succintly everything a layman needs to know about this great Greek philosopher. For example, we are told that Socrates stressed the importance of knowing oneself and being the best one could be. According to him, knowledge, especially that of the self, was the way to reaching one's potential. The narrator then tells us that his teachings are available to us because Plato wrote them down in the form of dialogues. 'The Apology' is his most important work.
Brian Johnson, the narrator, does an excellent job. Not only is the narration consistent, but he also gives some anecdotes and facts about Socrates' life which make this work very interesting. For example, he tells us that the philosopher's father was a stone mason and his mother a midwife! All in all, this audio title is a wonderful way to learn about the great Greek philosopher.
