From Amazon.com: Few of us are aware that the act of eating can be a powerful statement of commitment to our own well-being, and at the same time to the creation of a healthier world. In Diet for a New America, John Robbins brilliantly documents that our food choices can provide us with ways to enjoy life to the fullest, while making it possible that life itself might continue.

A fantastic case for vegan/vegetarianism, February 17, 2006

General Content – If anyone can make a case for vegan/vegetarianism it is John Robbins. First of all, he comes from a very interesting background as the son of one of the founders of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream stores chain. Second, he offers a wealth of reasons why removing meat from one’s diet makes sense ranging from health reasons to environmental reasons to spiritual reasons. He also seems to do so in a way that isn’t entirely overbearing, making the case several times that if individuals simply reduced meat consumption (rather than needing to eliminate it entirely) the world would be a much better place.
Where I didn’t agree with Robbins entirely was in his assessment of all meat as bad. In my readings, it seems that the right types of meats (e.g., salmon and other fish) can be quite healthy. Also, many of his reasons for not eating meat are actually more of an indictment against the current state of the meat industry. If healthier forms of meats are available (e.g., free range chickens) many of his arguments diminish. Having said that, Robbins makes a multitude of excellent points throughout the book and has certainly convinced me to reduce (if not entirely eliminate) my meat consumption.
Audio-Specific Content – I listened to the abridged (two cassette) version of this book. It was read by the author but also had some interesting passages read by Casey Casum. Overall, it was a very enjoyable listen and you could hear the passion in Robbins’ voice throughout the recording. The only downside of an audio version of this book was the lack of scientific references. I found myself asking several times “Could that really be true?” and did not have any way to verify. I have not read the book but I’m guessing the book probably provides these footnotes.
