MONDAY, JANUARY 07, 2008: In December 2005 Dr. Paul Krugman, listed as one of “World’s Top 100 Public Intellectuals,” was interviewed by Dr. James Reese. Topics covered include his new economics textbook, the US federal budget situation, and the economic costs/ benefits of the Iraq war. Paul Krugman is Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he regularly teaches the principles course. He received his BA from Yale and his PhD from MIT. Prior to his current position, he taught at Yale, Stanford, and MIT. He is the Centenary Professor at the London School of Economics. He also spent a year on the staff of the Council of Economic Advisers in 1982—1983. His research is mainly in the area of international trade, where he is one of the founders of the “new trade theory,” which focuses on increasing returns and imperfect competition. He also works in international finance, with a concentration in currency crises. In 1991,
Krugman received the American Economic Association’s John Bates Clark medal. In addition to his teaching and academic research, Krugman writes extensively for nontechnical audiences. Krugman is a regular op-ed columnist for the New York Times. His latest trade best-seller is The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century. His earlier books, Peddling Prosperity and The Age of Diminished Expectations, have become modern classics. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2007: Press Conference, Sept 5, 2007: The Columbia Program on International Investment has partnered with the Economist Intelligence Unit, a member of The Economist Group, to publish World Investment Prospects to 2011: Foreign Direct Investment and the Challenge of Political Risk. The report contains the first authoritative data on FDI flows for 2006 and forecasts flows until 2011, with 2007 set for a new record. It also contains the results of a survey of over 600 corporate executives concerning their investment intentions for the next five years. World Investment Prospects to 2011 pays special attention to the rise of FDI protectionism and regulatory risk. The report was released on Sept. 5, 2007.
In this press conference, the speakers (in order of appearance) are: Laza Kekic, Director, Country Forecasting Services, Economist Intelligence Unit, analyzes key FDI trends to 2011; Karl P. The question, "Where Is Russia headed?" has become a central preoccupation on the world stage.This forum brought together the following world-class U.S. scholars, journalists, diplomats, and Russian leaders to discuss this topic: Moderator Chrystia Freeland, U.S. Managing Editor, Financial Times. Participants - Erik Berglöf, Chief Economist and Special Adviser to the President, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; Padma Desai, Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Comparative Economic Systems, Columbia University; Yegor Gaidar, Director, Institute for the Economy in Transition and former Prime Minister of Russia; Jack F. Matlock Jr., former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Adjunct Professor, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University.
Serious reservations about Russia's direction under President Vladimir Putin have been expressed by many U.S. politicians and reported by some Western news organizations, while some Russian scholars depart from what they call "herd behavior" and raise questions about the "Russia-bashing" they see as a reminder of the "Japan-bashing" in the 1980s.
Is Russian democracy at bay? Is a new Cold War beginning? Who is responsible? Is the revival of the Russian economy, which has fuelled reassertion of Russian interests, due to the high oil revenues or due to structural reforms? Will Russian economic prosperity endure? MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2007: In August 1982 Dr. James Reese was invited to give a week-long series of export marketing seminars to the Guangdong Foreign Trade and Technical Consultation Corporation in Guangzhou (Canton), P.R. of China. Recently audio cassettes which had been recorded by the Guangdong corporation for later use by their employees were uncovered. This is the first hour of Dr. Reese’s initial seminar in English with Chinese translation. Note that China in 1982 was radically different from today’s China.
