Will You Be A Part of Change Or A Victim Of It? Brian Solis interview w/ Cenk Uygur

Thu, Mar 17, 2016

Futurist, change management specialist and “X: The Experience When Business Meets Design” author Brian Solis sits down with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur to talk about the past, present and future and how more and faster change is coming, and the only question is whether you’re going to be a part of that change or a victim of it.

Along the way, the two discuss how disruptive technologies and changing cultural standards will affect the news business, city planning, transportation and nearly every other aspect of how we live our lives.

Specifically, Uygur and Solis address:

- Why it’s not so terrible that people engage with their phones more than with one another face-to-face
- Why Apple, a company that never designed a remote control, will soon revolutionize what a remote control can do.
- How legacy-based decision making is killing both the taxi and TV news businesses
- Why Cenk says he’s more afraid of a random kid in Nebraska than all the cable news organizations in the world.

Green Party Candidate Jill Stein on Bernie, Hillary & a “Green New Deal” (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Mar 10, 2016

The Green Party’s Dr. Jill Stein is serious about running for president, and taking on the system that drives up student loan debt and healthcare costs, cuts taxes for the rich, promotes endless war while flooding weapons across the Middle East, and bails out the criminals on Wall Street while channeling young African-American males into the school-to-prison pipeline.

In this wide-ranging interview with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur, Stein also shares:

- Her plan to drive young people to the polls by promising to eliminate student debt
- Why, as much as she admires Bernie Sanders, the Democratic machine will never let him win
- Her strategy for dealing with ISIS
- The lessons of the Obama presidency
- Her position on Black Lives Matter
- Why no one else will deal with the urgency of the climate crisis
- How her plan for a Green New Deal can turn back the tide against climate
change while providing jobs and promoting a thriving economy

US Air Force Whistleblower on the Ugly TRUTH Behind US Drone Killings (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Mar 03, 2016

The United States’ targeted drone killing program is notoriously fraught with controversy. Just a few pointed concerns include the practice of video game-like killing from afar, the inevitable deaths of non-combatants and the constitutionality of extra-judicial murder away from the battlefield with no due process or transparency.

In this fascinating and at times disturbing TYT Interview, The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur speaks with former US Air Force drone operator and whistleblower Brandon Bryant and DRONE filmmaker Tonje Hessen Schei about the process of becoming a drone operator, what it’s like to kill someone you’ve never met from thousands of miles away while watching the event unfold on a screen, the impact of the US drone program on terrorist recruiting, and much more.

Ex-KKK Grand Wizard David Duke Explains How Jews Control Everything (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Feb 25, 2016

David Duke first rose to prominence in the ‘70s and ‘80s as a modern, more photogenic representative of the white supremacist movement, abandoning the Ku Klux Klan's robe and hood in favor of business suits and trading overt racist appeals in exchange for more “acceptable” coded language that involved disparaging “welfare queens” and “racial set-asides.”

Duke eventually left the Klan to found the “National Association for the Advancement of White People,” served one term as a Republican in the Louisiana state house, published two books, one on “Racial Understanding” and the other on “Jewish Supremacism,” ran for governor, senator and president, served a 15-month prison sentence for mail fraud and tax evasion, and today is a well-traveled international spokesman bringing attention to what he views as the Zionist conspiracy to run the world.

In this at times combative interview, an increasingly exasperated Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks listens as Duke goes on at great length attempting to substantiate his claims of a purported Jewish control of the media, the entertainment and banking industries and the US government - all while denying the label of anti-semite.

During the few breaks in his harangue, Duke briefly answers questions about:

- Whether he has any sympathy for African-Americans who, like him, claim to be victims of discrimination in the criminal justice system.
- Whether black people are more criminally inclined than white people or are simply targeted for arrest more frequently than whites.
- If MSNBC is run by a secret Irish-American cabal
- If he feels vindicated by the GOP’s adoption of policies he first pioneered, including the drug-testing of welfare recipients
- Whether all his railing against Zionism isn’t simply jealousy at the successes Jews have achieved while his and other white people’s fortunes have continued to dwindle.

Be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end!

Fugees Founder Pras Mich?l On Haiti, Democracy And Donald Trump (Interview w/ Jayar Jackson)

Thu, Feb 04, 2016

The child of Haitian-born parents, Fugees co-founder Pras Mich?l has always felt an affinity for the Caribbean nation and the long-suffering Haitian people. After a devastating earthquake hit Haiti in 2010 and the government seemed incapable of or uninterested in helping ease the people’s plight, Pras helped recruit hugely popular musician Michel Martelly, a.k.a. “Sweet Micky,” to run for president. Martelly’s successful campaign is documented in the new film “Sweet Micky For President” (http://www.sweetmickyforpresident.com)

In this wide-ranging interview with The Young Turks’ Jayar Jackson, Pras talks about:

- The role of protests in a democratic society
- How the Arab Spring and other movements abroad may finally be coming to the United States
- What was different about the University of Missouri football team’s protest - and why it succeeded
- How the LA Clippers could have made more of an impact to protest against owner Donald Sterling’s racist comments
- Whether health care should be a right or a privilege
- The Obama legacy
- Whether Donald Trump has a real shot at winning the presidency
- Sweet Micky as a man of the people and whether fellow Fugee Wyclef Jean could have also won.

Police Violence & Mass Incarceration - Which Side Are You On? (Carl Dix Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Jan 28, 2016

With allies like Cornel West and Quentin Tarantino, longtime activist and revolutionary Carl Dix helped found the Rise Up October movement against police brutality. He’s also been at the forefront of the fight against mass incarceration, the war on drugs and stop-and-frisk practices while supporting communities where police violence has ended the lives of African-Americans like Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, John Crawford and Michael Brown.

In this interview with The Young Turks’ host Cenk Uygur, Dix attacks the capitalist and imperialist sources that reinforce a range of societal ills, including police misconduct, the mass incarceration and marginalization of black and Latino Americans, the war on women and the dual exploitation and scapegoating of undocumented immigrants. The solution, he says, is to bring these structural inequities to light, compel the masses to decide “which side are you on?” and then mobilize for a political, economic and structural revolution and wholesale realignment of society.

Ramesh Srinivasan On Bolivia's Indigenous Media Revolution (interview w/ Dave Koller)

Thu, Jan 21, 2016

Having recently returned from his latest visit to some of the most remote areas of Bolivia, Ramesh Srinivasan, director of the UC Digital Cultures Lab and an Associate Professor in Information Studies  at UCLA, joins The Young Turks’ Dave Koller to discuss how cultural diversity can be empowered through technology efforts. Bolivia is such a richly multicultural nation that it can be seen as an interesting example for many of us across the world who are interested in how to support cultural diversity in a world where this is being lost. Srinivasan shares fascinating stories of how Bolivia’s indigenous communities are reinventing traditional media - specifically radio - to spread information across far-flung regions of the country, promote indigenous causes and help organize labor and workers. He provokes us to think about how social media and Internet initiatives can learn from radio.

Also discussed in this wide-ranging interview:
- The emerging and dynamic politics of South America, with an eye toward Bolivia and the pope's recent visit to the region
- The tensions and paradoxes associated with Bolivian president Evo Morales
- How radio may provide an answer to the angst we feel about the Internet
- Why new media and the Internet have failed to take hold with rural and indigenous communities and how radio can be a teacher in overcoming this.
- How technologies can support indigenous and non-western values and beliefs.
- What those of us in the west can learn from Bolivia’s efforts to promote connectedness.
- The first-hand experience of seeing Bolivians’ reaction to Pope Francis’ recent visit.

How Stem Cell Research Is Curing Heart Defects (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Jan 14, 2016

When we hear the term “Stem Cell Research”, we automatically think of controversy, and the conflict between religious groups and medical researchers that stole headlines in the lead up to the 2000 election. Today, stem cell research has progressed beyond using cells from embryos and is now an essential part of medical research – and potentially treatment – in adults.

Watch the first video in this series where Cenk interviews Praveen Singh and Jayde Lovell:
Stem Cell Research: At TYT It's Personal (Cenk Uygur Interview w/ Praveen Singh and Jayde Lovell)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb0umBLB-18&list=PLvTWdtzKwG6eaI3iFSEbvHUWyNO7WsZmG&index=2

Just one frontier for stem cell research is finding a cure for acute heart conditions. Around 280,000 people die every year from heart attacks, and many of those people will die with no warning and no prior history of heart disease. Research into the cause of these heart attacks is difficult – studying the genetic mutations that cause these heart attacks is all but impossible, as most carrying the mutation will never know they have it. But new stem cell technology allows doctors to use blood cells from an affected adult to grow both healthy and diseased tissue, giving scientists an opportunity to study the disease and trial potential cures.

In this incredible interview, TYT host Cenk Uygur speaks with three world-leading scientists about their groundbreaking international research, and their ‘hunt for the cause’ behind a family of heart conditions that continue to prove fatal for tens of thousands of Americans. They discuss the Nobel Prize-winning stem cell technology that allows scientists to grow heart tissue from blood cells, the creation of a “disease in a dish”, the rise of ‘precision medicine’, and the potential for genetic engineering technology to cure all gene-based illnesses and save millions of lives.

(Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College)

Dr Jim Cheung
(Assistant Professor of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University)

Stem Cell Research: At TYT It's Personal (Cenk Uygur Interview w/ Praveen Singh and Jayde Lovell)

Thu, Jan 07, 2016

One day, at age 31, The Young Turks' Head of Business Development Praveen Singh unexpectedly passed out at work. After a trip to the emergency room and multiple subsequent tests, she was told her episode had been caused by an irregular heart beat associated with a condition called "ventricular tachycardia."

Watch the second video in this series where Cenk interviews the research team:
How Stem Cell Research Is Curing Congenital Heart Defects (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur) https://youtu.be/ilVjSnE5t44

In this interview with TYT host Cenk Uygur and TYT science correspondent Jayde Lovell, Singh talks about the international fact-finding journey she embarked on to learn more about her condition and the difficult decisions she's had to make about whether to follow medical advice and have a defibrillator implanted and to take medications for the rest of her life.

The three also discuss how and why stem cell research is a uniquely effective method for uncovering the root cause of ventricular tachycardia and critical to helping isolate and cure a range of cardiac conditions that lead to the premature deaths of thousands of Americans.

Growing up as the only child of legendary comedian George Carlin wasn’t all laughs and jocular exchanges of the “seven dirty words.” In her new memoir, “A Carlin Home Companion: Growing Up With George,” author, radio host and podcaster Kelly Carlin describes her tumultuous upbringing, awash in drugs, alcohol and screaming fights - but also with a great deal a lot of love and affection.

In this interview with satirist and radio host Jimmy Dore, Carlin pulls the curtain back on what most people don’t know - or understand - about her famous father, while sharing intimate details abour her struggles as the child of alcoholic/addict parents, her escape from an abusive marriage and the peace of mind she’s achieved by charting her own path to personal fulfillment.

Why Is The Democratic Party Afraid Of Larry Lessig? (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Thu, Oct 22, 2015

Lawrence Lessig is running for president as a Democrat, but you wouldn’t know it from watching the first Democratic debate on CNN. Lessig’s solitary focus is on ending the corrosive, corrupting influence of money on the American political system, a position that may be too hot for the Democratic National Committee, which barred Lessig from the first Democratic debate on October 13th in Las Vegas.

"Sex At Dawn" Author Chris Ryan (Interview w/ Ana Kasparian)

Fri, Oct 16, 2015

Chris Ryan is the author, along with his wife Cacilda Jetha, of the New York Times bestseller “Sex At Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationships,” which advice columnist Dan Savage described as "the single most important book about human sexuality since Alfred Kinsey unleashed Sexual Behavior in the Human Male on the American public in 1948."

In this wide-ranging interview with The Young Turks’ Ana Kasparian, Ryan discusses why sexual monogamy among humans is a very recent invention, the critical difference between intimacy and sex, why polyamorous relationships are often much healthier - with better communication and less jealousy - than traditional pair bonds, the primitive roots of the cuckolding fetish, and why it can be perfectly OK to say, “go ahead, fuck the nanny.”

Fri, Oct 09, 2015

In this interview with The Young Turks’ Ana Kasparian, Cockerill talks about how this “outing” has changed his life and affected countless others who signed up for Ashley Madison, often for a wide range of reasons. They also discuss:

- Whether reports that very few women registered with Ashley Madison were accurate
- When infidelity within a relationship is justified

Can Lawrence Lessig Win The Presidency AND Get Money Out Of Politics? (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Fri, Sep 25, 2015

Harvard Law Professor and longtime political activist Lawrence Lessig wants to win the presidency of the United States to accomplish one critical objective: ending the corrupting influence of money on politics. With that done, he says he’ll step down and let someone else take over the Oval Office. It’s a radical notion, the single-issue presidential candidacy, but as he points out, only a radical solution can wrest back control of our democracy from the monied interests who have steadily come to dominate American political life.

In this exclusive interview, Lessig and The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur discuss:

- The Kickstarter campaign that will decide whether Lessig officially runs for president.
- Why, even if one of them were to become president, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have no hope of eliminating money from politics.
- Why the American people would get behind a one-issue candidacy to get money out of politics.
- Why the Democratic party is as guilty as Republicans for the current corrupt system.
- Whether Donald Trump’s candidacy is helpful or harmful to the cause of money in politics.
- The Three Prongs of Political Corruption that a Citizen Equality Act would deal with.
- Whether he would govern as president on other issues while trying to pass the Citizen Equality Act.
- How the fight against money in politics is the Civil Rights issue of our time, and that now is when the American people need to come together in shared sacrifice to take back democracy.

The activist, blogger and DJ who goes by the name “Fumes” has built a large following on Twitter and Tumblr by voicing strong objection to white appropriation of African-American culture, calling out white privilege in all its forms and targeting the fashion industry for what she describes as “Columbusing, colonizing and exploiting” black culture for profit without acknowledging the centuries of suffering, discrimination and exploitation that helped inform black Americans’ unique cultural expressions.

In this exclusive TYTInterview, Fumes and The Young Turks’ Ana Kasparian discuss:

- Their Twitter feud over “white feminism” that led to this interview
- What cultural appropriation looks like
- Allure Magazine’s celebration of Kylie Jenner’s cornrows

A Farking Governor? Fark.com Founder Drew Curtis Seeks Kentucky’s Top Post (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Fri, Sep 04, 2015

One of the earliest digital entrepreneurs, Drew Curtis built Fark.com into a hugely popular news aggregation site to rival Huffington Post, Drudge Report and Yahoo. Now he’s set his sights on a new challenge: an upstart independent campaign for governor of Kentucky, running on a platform of getting money out of politics, data-driven policy making and adopting best practices from other states’ experiences. Does he really have a chance?

In this interview, Curtis and The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur discuss:

- What, exactly, “Fark” means anyway
- How idiotic non-news has come to dominate the mainstream news media
- Whether the electorate is primed for a candidate who’s not about “business as usual”
- Massive government corruption that’s hidden in plain sight
- Can a gubernatorial candidate win by admitting that his/her state is not number one?
- How fact-and-data-based governance would function
- Curtis’ chances of breaking up the two-party duopoly in Kentucky and across the country

Norman Lear is a living legend, a pioneering TV producer who rewrote the rules for network television with ground-breaking shows like “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” “Maude,” “Sanford and Son” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.” He then turned his attention to politics, founding “People for the American Way,” an influential progressive advocacy group defending foundational Constitutional rights including free speech, freedom of religion and equal protection under the law. Now he’s documented his fascinating 90+ years on earth in a new memoir titled “Even This I Get to Experience.”

In this interview, Lear and The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur discuss:

- Why, even though he’s a standard-bearer for “liberal Hollywood, he considers himself “deeply conservative”
- How a quarter flipped to him by an uncle changed the trajectory of his life
- Why being a good liar got him fired from his first job as a press agent
- Which are his favorite TV shows of all time (number three may surprise you!)
- The experience in an airport terminal that made him realize that he’d finally “made it.”

Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show: Not "That Kind of Muslim" (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Tue, Apr 21, 2015

Aasif Mandvi established himself as a working actor in Hollywood in the 1990s and early 2000s appearing on TV shows like Miami Vice, CSI, Law & Order, The Sopranos and Oz. But he became a household — if often mispronounced — name after joining The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a “Senior Foreign-Looking Correspondent” in 2006.

Today Mandvi writes, produces and stars in a comedy web series poking fun at 80s sitcoms and anti-Muslim bias called “Halal in the Family” (http://halalinthefamily.tv)

In this interview, he talks with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur about:

- Turning down The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s initial offer for him to audition
- Why his youth spent in the north of England helped him as an adult trying to pick up American women
- How 9/11 changed everything for American Muslims
- How “Halal in the Family” was inspired by news anchor Katie Couric
- Long-standing Muslim traditions that CELEBRATE portraits of the Prophet Muhammad
- What motivates “New Atheists” like Bill Maher and Sam Harris to generalize about Muslims
- How his acting career was inspired in equal parts by The Fonz and Omar Sharif
- Why he once told a casting agent he’d be willing to learn how to be a snake charmer

Cenk and Ana Take On Controversial Pastor Manning

Tue, Feb 03, 2015

Pastor James David Manning of ATLAH World Missionary Church has gone back and forth with Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and The Young Turks, and today they attempt to set the record straight. What did Pastor Manning mean when he said he wanted to stone gay men and wants Harlem to be a homo-free zone? Could Starbucks really be mixing "gay semen" into coffee because of the delicious taste? Is Manning himself tempted by homosexuality, which he describes as a choice? And what about his statements criticizing black male celebrities and speakers? Manning also addresses his statements that President Obama is neither black nor the president, and that he had also shot the mother his alleged love child outside the White House. Can an unaccredited university discredit a school with accreditation? Can it discredit the state of New York?

Cenk and Ana also ask Manning straight on about his previous derogatory comments on Cenk's race as well as Ana's higher education and the indisputable fact that she is a woman.

Protecting Wikileaks & Freedom - Guardian Writer Trevor Timm Interview

Wed, Dec 10, 2014

Trevor Timm is executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and a lawyer and activist fighting for free speech and government transparency. Timm is a prolific writer whose work has appeared in The Guardian, Salon, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, Harvard Law and Policy Review, Politico, and PBS MediaShift.

Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Speech are in the First Amendment, and they're vital to the definition of the United States and what it stands for. So why aren't journalists who speak out for government transparency safe and comfortable inside our nation's borders? Trevor Timm fights for those rights with the Freedom of the Press Foundation. Whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning shouldn't be intimidated to speak the truth to U.S. citizens, and people who so much as visit Wikileaks shouldn't be tracked. Russia, Ukraine, Modern Cold War, & Edward Snowden - Expert Interview w/ Professor Stephen F. Cohen

Stephen Cohen is a professor of Russian Studies and History at New York University, one of the nation's foremost experts on Russian-American relations and the author of nine books on Russian history, including his latest, "Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the New Cold War." He's also a contributor to The Nation Magazine, and with his wife, The Nation editor and publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel, recently traveled to Russia to personally interview American dissident Edward Snowden.

Cohen has been a vocal critic of US/NATO policy over the Ukraine crisis, as well as US media's depiction of Putin as the aggressor and Ukraine the victim. What is the true standing of Russia as an international power? Do you agree with Professor Cohen on the Russian-Ukranian conflict? and Russia's popular image? Is he indeed a "Putin apologist" as his critics have said?

Inside the Emperor's Club w/ Former Companion Valerie Baber (Interview)

Mon, Dec 01, 2014

Valerie Baber is a sex coach, former erotica model and actress, and was part of the infamous Emperor's Club as a companion, or as you might say, an escort. As she explains, her job was not what you might automatically think! Valerie has a very non-judgmental take on sexuality-- what formed it, and what experiences got her there? Why is there such a stigma and high price on sexuality?

Valerie talks about her fascinating life breaking away from her Bible-belt family, experiences with nude-dancing, and how she wound up at the infamous New York Emperor's Club. Was Eliot Spitzer "Reckless?" Who was paying $20,000 a night for sex? What did these men want?

Valerie Barber discusses all this and what's in her book, "Notorious VIP : Confessions of an Emperor's Club Companion," with Cenk Uygur in this eye-opening interview.

Legislative v. Constitutional Remedies (Money Out Voters In Conference)

Legislative v. Constitutional Remedies: The potential and limits of legislative solutions. Moderator: Cenk Uygur (host, The Young Turks), Trevor Potter (Campaign Legal Center), Lawrence Lessig (Harvard Law School), Trent Lange (California Clean Money Campaign)?

http://moneyoutvotersin.org/

Our democracy is in danger. The influence of big money over our government grows steadily as the power of individual American citizens weakens every day. Due to historic Supreme Court decisions, giant contributions from wealthy individuals and corporations shapes who gets elected and what they do once in office. Big money increasingly dominates our economic, environmental, and social policies. It's time for Americans to take back their government.?

Guerrilla Art Legend Robbie Conal

Mon, Nov 17, 2014

Guerilla street artist Robbie Conal is famous for his brand of political commentary through his posters depicting U.S. political figures in grotesque, unconventional ways. He and his "volunteer guerrilla postering army" can canvas his poster art over a city overnight. Conal's work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, as well as CBS's This Morning and Charlie Rose.

He is also an MFA graduate and an adjunct professor of painting and drawing at the University of Southern California's Roski School of Fine Arts.

What are Conal's views on art, graffiti and the power they have for real change? What is his favorite work and what was its wave of impact? Is there such a thing as organized anarchy, and how does Conal achieve it? What are his methods, how have they evolved, and how will they continue to evolve?

Cenk Uygur discusses all these topics with Robbie Conal in this in-depth interview.

The Culture High - Debunking Lies About Marijuana

Thu, Oct 30, 2014

The Culture High is a documentary that tears into the very fibre of modern day marijuana prohibition to reveal the truth behind the arguments and motives governing both those who support and those who oppose the existing pot laws. Culture High Director Brett Harvey and Producer Adam Scorgie talk to Cenk Uygur about the longstanding propaganda against marijuana and why technology has enabled people to tear those arguments against marijuana health and safety apart. How has the war on marijuana failed? The Culture High uses interviews with ex-police officers and DEA agents about how they're incentivized to go for possession arrests over all other crimes. How can people enact change in the way marijuana is distributed and penalized?

Todd Stiefel Interview - Free Thought, Morality, & Atheism

Tue, Oct 21, 2014

Todd Stiefel is the found and president of Stiefel Free Thought Foundation, one of the leading atheist groups in the country.

He says he was born an atheist (as we all are) and grew up devoutly Catholic. Only later did he realize the practices and mantras he learned at religious camps were simillar to practices used in brainwashing. He says his group's goal is not to convert the religious over to atheism, but to prevent people from becoming fundamentalist.

According to Stiefel, atheists have an uphill battle in the quest for public acceptance, but it is doable. He says atheists need to gain respect from the religious and show that they have morality and also show how most religious people have more in common with atheists than they do with fundamentalists.

He says the model for the atheist movement should be the LGBT community - need to come out, organize, and get financial support. Stiefel says freethinking has to replace other things religions have to offer - social connection, charity, and more. Can that be achieved?

Reza Aslan - Bigotry, Fundamentalism and Neo-Atheism in the Media

Sun, Oct 19, 2014

Professor Reza Aslan is the author of the New York Times #1 Bestseller "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth," and is a writer and scholar on religious studies.

Is there a media bias against Islam? Reza Aslan points to certain media pundits and hosts who call all religion bad, but Islam "the worst." Is it bigoted when pundits like Sam Harris call any non-extremist Muslims "not real" Muslims? Are some media commentators denouncing and defining Christian and Muslim extremism themselves fundamentalist bigots? Where is the balance between when interpreting holy text? What is the difference between atheism and neo-atheism? Is there such a thing as the one "truth?"

Reza Aslan sits down with The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur to discuss and debate the state of religious commentary in media, religious ignorance, the removal of religion from society and neo-atheism, what it really means to be religious, picking-and-choosing attitudes across the board, and much more on fundamental misunderstandings of religion.

Masterminds & Wingmen - "Mean Girls" For Boys? w/ Rosalind Wiseman

Sat, Oct 18, 2014

Rosalind Wiseman is a teacher, author, and media spokesperson on bullying, ethical leadership, social media, and media literacy. She wrote "Queen Bees & Wannabes," a bestseller that later served as the basis for the hit movie "Mean Girls." Her most recent book is "Masterminds and Wingmen: Helping Our Boys Cope with Schoolyard Power, Locker-Room Tests, Girlfriends, and the New Rules of Boy World."

How can boys cope with major issues growing up such as self-identity, dealing with racism and homophobia, standing up for themselves and what principles matter to them, and as society puts it, "be a man?" What about issues such as bullying and hazing, as shown in an extreme sense with the Sayreville High School Football case that can actually be considered sexual assault? When is it right to fight and when is the right choice to "use your words?"

And how can caring parents help their boys without unintentionally hurting them in the long run?

Cenk Uygur talks in-depth with Rosalind Wiseman about raising boys in a way that helps them become well-adjusted, honorable men.

More on Rosalind: http://rosalindwiseman.com/

Her other books include:
- Queen Bee Moms & King Pin Dads: Dealing with the Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Counselors Who Can Make—or Break—Your Child's Future

Wiping Out Disease - Jimmy Carter Intervew With Cenk

Guinea Worm is a parasitic infection spread through unclean drinking water. It causes intense debilitating pain (so much that it was nicknamed "the fiery serpent"), and was once extremely prevalent across Asia and Africa. The Carter Center has worked hard to fight against Guinea Worm, and now, it's on track to be the second disease to be eradicated after smallpox.

What does it take to eradicate a widespread disease? And why did former president Carter choose to focus on this one? Is there anything else he wishes he could have used his powers as the president on?

Life and Loathing in Greater Israel - Author Max Blumenthal Interview

Mon, Oct 06, 2014

Max Blumenthal is the author of Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel; he speaks to Cenk Uygur about the situation in Gaza straight from Ramallah on the West Bank. He has been a vocal opponent of Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing militaristic leadership of Israel, the U.S. government's support of violent acts in the name of the state, as well as the treatment of people living on the Gaza Strip.

Max argues that the status of people living on the Gaza Strip is worse than what black South Africans suffered during Apartheid, asks why the U.S. continues to push for assault on the Gaza Strip, and explains how he, as a Jewish man, mitigates his criticism of the state of Israel. Can Americans protest the violence and death through boycott?

Russell Brand on Corporate Power in Media & Who Is Really Being Served

Sat, Oct 04, 2014

Russell Brand (now on The Trews) is well known for his comedy and acting, but also his commentary and analysis of main stream media and the faults therein. Today, he talks to Cenk Uygur about the the unbelievable corporate bias in news, our modern political landscape, and how we can fix and cope with both cultures. How does Ferguson coverage show us how pundits like Bill O'Reilly and others have failed the American public? When did news conform to the status quo and maintaining the agenda of the powerful, rather than serving the public? How do those of us without billions of dollars at our disposal cope with the world as it is? And how does the role of celebrity ironically play into this?

Russell and Cenk have a frank discussion on these topics and the toxic relationships between politics, mainstream media, and power, and how money is the corrupting link between them all.

Wolf-PAC California & How Volunteers Get Money Out of Politics

Fri, Oct 03, 2014

Read about Wolf-PAC for yourself HERE: http://www.wolf-pac.com/

Wolf-PAC's goal is singular- get the power and influence of money out of politics. All too often, donors to political campaigns are able to get our representatives to work to accomplish what they want-- but what about what the citizens want? How can everyday people fight corruption in our government? Wolf-PAC volunteers-- normal citizens-- have been able to successfully get resolutions to get conventions which help us push out the power of money out of our political system. Here in California, Wolf-PAC volunteers worked hard, and saw real success with CA AJR1. Now, leaders including California State Leader Alison Hartson, California Organizer Will Yate, and California Regional Coordinator Kathy Orlinsky join founder Cenk Uygur to discuss it all. Do you think we can pass a resolution? These people are working every day to do it!
