PN 123: The Spirit of Life

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Nov 23, 2009

“When you realize that the Spirit individualized itself and named itself you, you unhook yourself from nonsense, such as what others think of you, even what you are thinking about yourself. Instead, you begin to ask, “How is the Spirit of Life functioning in, through, and as me?” Place that question before the tribunal of your consciousness more and more frequently, and you will begin to attune yourself to insights from the realm of the Real.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 122: Personality vs. Character

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Nov 20, 2009

“Understand that to be creatively maladjusted is to know the vital distinction between personality and character. The word character is from the Old French caractere and means “imprint on the soul.” The etymology of personality suggests veneer and is connected with the Latin word persona, which was a mask worn by actors. Character is revealed when our mask is removed. It’s easy to tell if you are living from character or personality: If things aren’t going your way, personality pouts while character remains unruffled and learns from the experience. When you are not in psychologically or emotionally safe territory, personality panics. Character, on the other hand, rides the vicissitudes of life with even-mindedness. Personality endeavors to extract happiness from its experiences, whereas character realizes that happiness is an inherent quality of being that infuses experiences with happiness.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 121: Spiritual Indigestion and Constipation

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Nov 18, 2009

“To agree with the keys described here is one thing, to practice them is another. To read and study and have conversations about spiritual practices is good, but unless you incorporate them into your life, you won’t embody or integrate them—which means you aren’t receiving their benefits. Ask yourself, “How can I now move from theory into practice?” If you merely collect spiritual information without practicing it, all you will develop is a case of spiritual indigestion and constipation.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 120: Practice, Practice, Practice

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Nov 16, 2009

“That which transforms your life is what you practice. And what you practice constitutes your personal laws of life—not what you merely believe in, but what you practice. It’s all well and good to read books, and to attend seminars, lectures, and workshops, and to say, “Oh, that really resonates with me! It’s now part of my life’s philosophy.” Your philosophy may give you a temporary state of euphoria, but if you want to be anchored in reality, it takes practice, practice, practice. We are not here to be euphoric but to get free. Rudimentary spirituality is theory; advanced spirituality is practice.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 119: Burning Bagels and Mis-takes

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Nov 13, 2009

“A conscious realization of our innate oneness with the Ineffable does not mean that we will never make a mistake again. Even enlightened beings burn their bagels once in a while. It’s important to maintain a sense of humor because this is how you will stop being afraid of making a mistake. You’ll make some, but so what? That’s why they’re called mis-takes. Humor relaxes the uptight ego. You get a new cue from your inner Self and simply say, “I missed my cue, so let’s do a second take.” Your willingness to take the risk of making a mistake is actually an expression of courage and a willingness to grow from them. Mistakes are about getting the blessing in the lesson and the lesson in the blessing.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 118: Don’t Wait. Participate, Risk & Grow Now!

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Nov 11, 2009

“What keeps nagging at you to take action that you keep holding back on, postponing? Don’t wait. Participate, risk, and grow now. The longer you hide out in the attempt to remain safe, the more you become fearful, nervous, hesitant. You will not be present as a participant in birthing a new world, a world that very much wants and needs the contribution of your consciousness.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 117: Positive-Negativity

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Nov 09, 2009

“Not all pain is negative, even though we label all forms of pain as such and resist them. Positive-negativity is a circumstance that causes us to go deeper, to search ourselves, to stop placing blame on the causes of suffering outside ourselves, and take self-responsibility. Circumstances arise and hard times come so that we may grow through them, so that we may evolve. I like to say that a bad day for the ego is a good day for the soul. When we look back on some of our most challenging experiences, we admit that we wouldn’t trade what we gained from them for remaining the same as we were. Something within acknowledges that during those times when we are pressed against the ropes of life, we learn to become more generous, to forgive, to never give up on ourselves or others. We learn to regenerate, to rejuvenate, to surrender.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 116: Freedom from the Tyranny of Trends

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Nov 06, 2009

“One of the ways we hijack our capacity to experience a state of beholding is that we become swept up in what I call the “tyranny of trends.” The tyranny of trends allows for the lowest common denominator to set the standard of success, and of course, “coolness.” Very often, trends convince individuals what their life’s purpose should be. The tyranny of trends is blasted out at us from television, radio, newspapers, tabloids, computers, and even our dentist’s waiting room, attempting to convince us that we must smell a certain way, wear a certain label, weigh a specific weight, have whiter teeth, drive a certain car, make a certain income, and so on, before we can consider that we’ve made it.” ~ Michael Bernard Beckwith from Spiritual Liberation

PN 114: Are You a “Now” Or “Later” Person?

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Nov 02, 2009

“If I asked you what kind of person you are—a “now” or “later” person—which would you choose? I’ll give you the breakdown. The “now” folks are consistently drawn toward pleasing activities, spending their time getting lost in TV, sex, food, laziness—you know, all the fun-in-the-moment stuff. The “later” group, on the other hand, is drawn toward pleasing results, often engaging in less-than-pleasing activities in the moment. They invest their time in things like going to the gym, working long hours, reading good books, attending personal transformation events, hanging out with people who stretch their thinking, following through, risking, becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. Which of these two groups of people do you think experiences real freedom? Which category do you fall into? Be honest.” ~ James Arthur Ray from Harmonic Wealth

PN 113: Everything Has a Gestation Period

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Nov 02, 2009

“Everything has a gestation period, a time period that must pass before things will come into form. If you plant a carrot seed, it takes about seven weeks for the sprout to make its above-dirt entrance. Bamboo, which can grow up to thirteen feet in as little as one week, takes up to seven years to break through the surface of the ground. But for seven long years it looks like absolutely nothing’s happening. Now that takes some commitment.” ~ James Arthur Ray from Harmonic Wealth

PN 111: Tough Grapes, Fine Wines & Your (Fine) Life

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Oct 26, 2009

“I recently toured the California wine country, and was fascinated to learn that in winemaking, the grapes are purposely stressed. Growers take care not to give the grapes much water, even though they raise them in full sunshine, purposely keeping shade to a minimum. The stress is intentional; it keeps grapes right on the border between survival and almost collapsing and dying because the grapes that survive the test make the finest wine. There’s a metaphor here: Don’t wish for an easier life. Wish to be at your finest. Just as the finest, most expensive wine comes from the grape that can stand the greatest resistance, you too will grow in direct proportion to the resistance you can sustain.” ~ James Arthur Ray from Harmonic Wealth

PN 110: Who Will You Have to Become?

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Oct 23, 2009

“I remember years ago hearing one of my mentors say, “Decide to be a millionaire, not for the green slips of paper, but for who you’ll have to become to get there.” That’s what we’re doing together—expanding who you are in all of the key areas of your life so that you’ll grow into the person who can create all that you desire. It’s really not the goal completion, but the growth that comes in the process that your spiritual self truly desires. I promise, you’ll never “get” a desire, a true desire for something you can’t achieve. Never have, never will. When you get a real desire, it’s your Higher Self saying, C’mon, this is what you’re capable of; this is what I have in store for you. It’s the greater, grander you, echoing backward through time. How cool is that? Now the only question is: Will you heed the call? It was the great mythologist Joseph Campbell who stated, “The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.” Well, what will it be?” ~ James Arthur Ray from Harmonic Wealth

PN 106: Why Balance Is Bogus

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Oct 14, 2009

“I’m a great believer in harmony, but balance is bogus. Many teachers talk about balance, and guess what? Not one of them is balanced. I know; I used to be one of them. The only people who are perfectly balanced are six feet under and it’s not your time yet. Balance in this world cannot be achieved, so get over it. Think of a scale. In perfect balance, nothing’s happening. There’s no dynamism, no life or vibrancy. Now, think of a jazz band in action—the life and vibrancy are palpable, aren’t they? The performers in this band have less to do with playing the melody as written and more to do with improvising. They give life to nuance and the music takes shape in the moment. That’s harmony.” ~ James Arthur Ray from Harmonic Wealth

PN 104: Love Begins with You

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Oct 09, 2009

Love Begins with You“One of the strangest delusions believed by many of us is that it is good to love other people but bad to love yourself. I suggest that the more you are able to see, love, and accept the one facet of Spirit gazing at you from the mirror, the more you will be able to love Spirit within others. If we are the same awareness shining through a billion separate forms, then all love begins with self-love. For the heart to awaken, it cannot exclude a single soul, including yourself. If you do not love yourself, how can you find the space to love others?” ~ Dan Millman from Everyday Enlightenment

PN 101: Emotional Meteorology 101

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Oct 02, 2009

“Of course, we don’t love painful feelings like anxiety or depression. We don’t have to love or even like them, but we do have to accept them, as difficult as that can seem at times. Emotions, no matter how painful they are, are not the problem. The problem is dropping out of school or work, putting your family or duties of life on hold until such time as you can work out your emotional issues. Would you rather feel depressed while sitting alone in your room trying to figure it all out or feel depressed while getting your house cleaned or your project completed? (You may still feel depressed, but you have a cleaner house.) The heart of accepting your emotions (and, as you’ve seen, of reclaiming your will) is to do what you need to do despite what you are feeling. Accept and learn from your feelings, but don’t let them run your life. By remaining productive during difficult emotional episodes, you are more likely to improve your emotional state than if you do nothing but ruminate and wait for sunny skies.” ~ Dan Millman from Everyday Enlightenment

PN 100: Pain & Suffering

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Sep 30, 2009

“Pain is a relatively objective, physical phenomenon; suffering is our psychological resistance to what happens. Events may create physical pain, but they do not in themselves create suffering. Resistance creates suffering. Stress happens when your mind resists what is. If your spouse or lover leaves you, the amount of stress or suffering each of you experiences depends upon the meanings each of you places on the event. If you believe it to be good, that you are not free, you suffer less; if you believe it is bad, that you are now alone, you suffer more. The only problem in your life is your mind’s resistance to life as it unfolds.” ~ Dan Millman from Everyday Enlightenment

PN 097: Desired & Undesired Habits

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Sep 23, 2009

“Make any positive behavior as convenient as possible. To break my habit of snacking in the evenings, I keep dental floss and a toothbrush in the downstairs bathroom near the kitchen. Right after dinner I floss and brush. I’m far less likely to snack, because if I eat something, I have to floss and brush all over again. Make any negative behavior as inconvenient as possible. To smoke less, keep only one pack of cigarettes at home, in a small locked safe under some luggage in the closet in the garage. You might also put the television in that same closet, so you take it out only for special events, and use your old TV time writing that book, painting that picture, or learning a new language. In this way you replace old negative routines with new behaviors, pouring new energy into a new you.” ~ Dan Millman from Everyday Enlightenment

Then come back inside, and continue reading this exercise. Now consider the moment the object was in the air. At that moment you weren’t thinking of what you’d have for dinner or what you did yesterday. You weren’t thinking of anything else, either. You may have been attending to thoughts before you threw it or after you caught it, but during the throw, you were pure attention, reaching out, waiting for the object’s descent. PN 092: Relax & Stay Focused on Constructive Action

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Sep 11, 2009

“Body mind masters do not deny or repress their feelings but learn to stay physically relaxed even under stressful situations. Even when feeling angry, fearful, and sorrowful, breathe evenly and fully. Keep your body relaxed. You have much more control over your behavior than you do over your thoughts or emotions so paradoxically the best way to master your emotions is to let them be, stay relaxed, and focus on constructive action. So, accept your emotions as natural to you in the moment, without trying to fix them. Know your purpose or goal--not someone else’s. He said when the mind is stuck, you’re in dukkha (usually translated from the Sanskrit as suffering). Dukkha literally means a wheel whose hub doesn’t move. So what kind of a wheel do you have? A useless, dysfunctional wheel. What good is a wheel if it doesn’t move? What Buddha discovered and taught was to free up the wheel. He called it sukkha, a liberated wheel, a freed-up wheel. “Sir, life is very strange. The moment you are very clear about what you want to do, things happen. Life comes to your aid--a friend, a relation, a teacher, a grandmother, somebody helps you. But if you are afraid to try because your father may turn you out, then you are lost. Life never comes to the aid of those who merely yield to some demand out of fear. But if you say, “This is what I really want to do and I am going to pursue it,” then you will find that something miraculous takes place. You may have to go hungry, struggle to get through, but you will be a worthwhile human being, not a mere copy, and that is the miracle of it.” ~ Krishnamurti from Think on These Things

Then everything teaches you--a deaf leaf, a bird in flight, a smell, a tear, the rich and the poor, those who are crying, the smile of a woman, the haughtiness of a man. You learn from everything, therefore there is no guide, no philosopher, no guru. Life itself is your teacher, and you are in a state of constant learning.” ~ Krishnamurti from Think on These Things

PN 078: Joy Has No Contradictions

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Aug 10, 2009

“Suppose you want to study painting because to paint is the joy of your life, and your father says that you must become a lawyer or a business man, otherwise he will cut you off and not pay for your education; there is then a contradiction in you, is there not? Now, how are you going to remove that inner contradiction, to be free of the struggle and the pain of it? As long as you are caught in self-contradiction you cannot think; so you must remove the contradiction, you must do one thing or the other. Which will it be? Will you yield to your father? If you do, it means that you have put away your joy, you have wed something which you do not love; and will that resolve the contradiction? Whereas, if you withstand your father, if you say, “Sorry, I don’t care if I have to beg, starve, I am going to paint,” then there is no contradiction; then being and doing are simultaneous, because you know what you want to do and you do it with your whole heart. But if you become a lawyer or a business man while inside you are burning to be a painter, then for the rest of your life you will be a dull, weary human being living in torment, in frustration, in misery, being destroyed and destroying others.” ~ Krishnamurti from Think on These Things

PN 077: The Key: To Love What You Do

Author: Brian Johnson
Fri, Aug 07, 2009

“Can you and I, who are simple, ordinary people, live creatively in this world without the drive of ambition which shows itself in various ways as the desire for power, position? You will find the right answer when you love what you are doing. If you are an engineer merely because you must earn a livelihood, or because your father or society expects it of you, that is another form of compulsion; and compulsion in any form creates a contradiction, a conflict. Whereas, if you really love to be an engineer, or a scientist, or if you can plant a tree, or paint a picture, or write a poem, not to gain recognition but just because you love to do it, then you will find that you never need to compete with another. I think this is the real key: to love what you do.” ~ Krishnamurti from Think on These Things

“You see, without a purpose in life, it’s easy to get sidetracked on your life’s journey. It’s easy to wander and drift, accomplishing little. But with a purpose, everything in life seems to fall into place. To be “on purpose” means you’re doing what you love to do, doing what you’re good at and accomplishing what’s important to you. When you truly are on purpose, the people, resources, and opportunities you need naturally gravitate toward you. PN 069: Positive Rituals

Author: Brian Johnson
Wed, Jul 15, 2009

“We use the word “ritual” purposefully to emphasize the notion of a carefully defined, highly structured behavior. In contrast to will and discipline, which require pushing yourself to a particular behavior, a ritual pulls at you. Think of something as simple as brushing your teeth. It is not something that you ordinarily have to remind yourself to do. Brushing your teeth is something to which you feel consistently drawn, compelled by its clear health value. You do it largely on automatic pilot, without much conscious effort or intention. The power of rituals is that they insure that we use as little conscious energy as possible where it is not absolutely necessary, leaving us free to strategically focus the energy available to us in creative, enriching ways.” ~ Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz from The Power of Full Engagement

PN 068: Intrinsic (vs. Extrinsic) Purpose

Author: Brian Johnson

“Purpose also becomes a more powerful source of energy when it moves from being externally to internally motivated. Extrinsic motivation reflects the desire to get more of something that we don’t feel we have enough of: money, approval, social standing, power or even love. “Intrinsic” motivation grows out of the desire to engage in an activity because we value it for the inherent satisfaction it provides. Researchers have long found that intrinsic motivation tends to prompt more sustaining energy. A study conducted by the University of Rochester’s Human Motivation Research Group found, for example, that people whose motivation was authentic—defined as “self-authored”—exhibited more interest, excitement and confidence, as well as greater persistence, creativity and performance than a control group of subjects who were motivated largely by external demands and rewards.” ~ Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz from The Power of Full Engagement

“ Our minds--made up of our thoughts, beliefs, and self-talk--are always “on.” According to scientists, we have about 60,000 thoughts a day. That’s one thought per second during every waking hour. No wonder we’re so tired at the end of the day!And what’s even more startling is that of those 60,000 thoughts, 95 percent are the same thoughts you had yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. Your mind is like a record player playing the same record over and over again... Talk about being stuck in a rut...Still, that wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the next statistic: for the average person, 80 percent of those habitual thoughts are negative. That means that every day most people have more than 45,000 negative thoughts... “I explained that while breakthroughs are important and thrilling, it’s the subsequent stabilization and integration of the breakthrough into daily life that really allow the changes to be permanent.” ~ Gay Hendricks from The Big LeapI love the whole business of breakthroughs followed by stabilization and then integration. Ken Wilber describes it as “states and stages” and it’s a REALLY important concept to embrace and bring into our lives. (See my Notes on Wilber for a longer discussion!)The basic idea is very simple and very powerful when appreciated and applied: We often have moments of inspiration or breakthroughs or “state experiences” when we see the world in a new, revolutionary way. Those experiences are, of course, awesome. :)And... they’re only really meaningful if, after the initial buzz wears off, we have the discipline and the diligence and the patience and the persistence (and playfulness!) to create the structures in our lives that enable that breakthrough to stabilize and integrate and become a new way of being or “stage of our development.” Make sense? PN 056: Breathe Into Your Fear

“There’s only one way to get through the fog of fear, and that’s to transform it into the clarity of exhilaration. One of the greatest pieces of wisdom I’ve ever heard comes from Fritz Perls, MD, the psychiatrist and founder of Gestalt therapy. He said, “Fear is excitement without the breath.” Here’s what this intriguing statement means: the very same mechanisms that produce excitement also produce fear, and any fear can be transformed into excitement by breathing fully with it. On the other hand, excitement turns into fear quickly if you hold your breath. When scared, most of us have a tendency to try to get rid of the feeling. We think we can get rid of it by denying or ignoring it, and we use holding our breath as a physical tool of denial.” ~ Gay Hendricks from The Big Leap

“Am I willing to feel good and have my life go well all the time? At ď¬rst glance, you might ask who wouldn’t say yes to all of these questions. Well, for many of us, the idea of all of this positive emotion seems far-fetched to begin with. It is easy for us to just assume that with the positive comes the negative. To that I say, “Why not get willing, and see what happens?” We humans have a long and wonderful history of transcending our beliefs about what’s possible. In the early days of the steam-powered train, learned scientists urged capping the speed at thirty miles per hour because they believed that the human body exploded at speeds greater than that. Finally some brave people risked going beyond that limiting belief and found that they did not explode. I think we’re approximately at that same stage of development with regard to our ability to feel good and have our lives go well.” ~ Gay Hendricks from The Big Leap

A bird does not need to take lessons in nest-building. Nor does it need to take courses in navigation. Yet birds do navigate thousands of miles, sometimes over open sea. They have no newspapers or TV to give them weather reports, no books written by explorer or pioneer birds to map out for them the warm areas of the earth. “Our self-image and our habits tend to go together. Change one and you will automatically change the other. The word “habit” originally meant a garment or clothing... Our habits are literally garments worn by our personalities. They are not accidental, or happenstance. We have them because they fit us. They are consistent with our self-image and our entire personality pattern. When we consciously and deliberately develop new and better habits, our self-image tends to outgrow the old habits and grow into the new pattern.” ~ Maxwell Maltz from Psycho-Cynernetics

“A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them. Addressing the men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores unless we win! We now have no choice—we win—or we perish!” They won.Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat. PN 007: (Emotional) Fuel Gauges

Author: Brian Johnson
Mon, Jan 19, 2009

"When the fuel gauge on your vehicle indicates that the tank is empty, you do not criticize the indicator. You receive the information that it has offered you, and you do something about adding more fuel to your tank. Similarly, a negative feeling is an indicator that your current choice of thoughts has you offering a vibration that is so out of harmony with your Source Energy that you are currently disallowing your full connection to that Energy Stream. (You could say your tank is reaching empty.) Your emotions do not create, but they do indicate what you are currently attracting. If your emotions are helping you know that your choice of thoughts is not taking you in the direction that you desire to go, then do something about that: Replenish your connection by choosing better-feeling thoughts." ~  Esther & Jerry Hicks from Ask and It Is Given

"To be sure, great performers are well trained, experienced, smart, and in some cases, divinely talented. But the way their brains work during a performance is a lot more like a squirrel's than like Einstein's. Like squirrels, the best in every business do what they have learned to do without questioning their abilities—they flat out trust their skills, which is why we call this high-performance state of mind the "Trusting Mindset." Routine access to the Trusting Mindset is what separates great performers from the rest of the pack." ~ Dr. John Eliot from Overachievement
