We're Building a Dystopia Just to Make People Click on Ads

Techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci encourages us to think about the consequences of highly personalized artificial intelligence in disseminating information on the Internet from popular sites like Google, YouTube, Facebook, and others. Where early A.I. meant ads following us around the Web, todayвЂ™s advanced A.I. knows how to best to capture our data and attention to keep us hooked to the Internet so that weвЂ™ll click more ads. And while this intelligence is relatively benign when it is trying to sell us a pair of shoes, it is much more concerning when it is controlling what news we see and donвЂ™t see. The proprietary algorithms of advanced Internet companies can often push extremist and conspiratorial views without any human oversight, and then utilize our desire to view this information in order to make us view or click more ads. Tufekci provides many examples of studies where such artificial intelligence has worked in order to influence social and political behavior. ItвЂ™s a cautionary tale of dominant Internet companies and the technologies they develop that hold increasing control over our daily lives.
