Marijuana Economics

On Election Day November 2nd Californians will vote on Proposition 19 which would legalize marijuana in the state of California. In this debate at the Commonwealth Club, three panelists weigh out the pros and cons of marijuana legalization basically along the guidelines laid out in Prop 19.

El Cerrito Police Chief Scott Kirkland argues against legalization due to potential public health hazards and the unknown costs and consequences of legalization. Legalization advocate and Prop 19 originator Richard Lee and psychiatrist Eugene Schoenfeld argue for legalization pointing out the potential tax benefits for the state of California, the reduced crime and need for law enforcement and incarceration regarding illegal marijuana trafficking, the fact that marijuana use has contributed to no immediate deaths to the user, and numerous other reasons. It's a good debate over a proposition which is sure to have a close vote on election day. This debate is available on streaming video from FORA.tv.

Ending the War on Drugs: A Solution for America

In this outstanding examination of the country's most troubling problem, a conservative Republican shows how and why America is losing the war on drugs and makes an important contribution to the debate on alternative policies.

Author Dirk Eldredge demonstates how the drug war has led only to overcrowded courts and prisons, rising crime, official corruption, eroded civil rights and race relations, and new public-health crises. He makes the case for an alternative strategy: tightly controlled legalization accompanied by expanded drug education, prevention, research, and treatment programs.
