LearnOutLoud.com Review
With The Quest for the Historical Jesus, renowned philosopher, physician, and medical missionary Albert Schweitzer makes a critical investigation of various 19th century attempts to recover the historical facts of Christ's life. Emphasizing the fact that much of the end-time prophecies Jesus predicted did not come to pass in a literal sense, Schweitzer argues that the message of early Christian theology has been ignored by the faithful at large for thousands of years. He goes on to illustrate how early church leaders, most notably during the time of Constantine, modified the idea of an imminent apocalypse in part to preserve power and employment. This leaves a Christ that is in some ways a man of his time with an urgent message that didn't directly apply to humanity at the dawn of the 20th century. This book made Schweitzer's name as a scholar, and after giving up theological work thereafter, he embarked on his fabled career as a doctor in Africa. This unabridged audio book is available for free on audio download from Librivox.
