  • 159: Tonya Dawn and Justin Recla of The Recla Group
    Tue, Jun 20, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Tonya Dawn and Justin have an incredibly interesting background. But if they tell you about, they may have to “disappear you.” Justin served in the US Army and is a former counterintelligence agent. Tonya also worked in government intelligence as a Special Agent. Together they may have gone on some very Jason Bourne adventures, but we will never know.

What we do know is they are married, together 10 years and in business together 8 years. They have an amazing daughter, Neva, (www.NevaLeeRecla.com) and they created their life and business around being able to be present for each other and their daughter.

    A little about their business.

Tonya Dawn and Justin created two companies together. They each play to their strengths in their own companies, but at the same time, work aspects of each business together.

Justin transitioned his counterintelligence techniques into the business world. He used his experience in government and in the corporate world to create the Clear Business DirectoryTM, increasing trust and certainty through transparency in business-to-business transactions.

Tonya used what she learned as a government agent exploring the human psyche to create Super Power Experts®. Tonya cracked the code of enlightened self-actualization and is a student of energy manipulation, transmutation, clair senses, and other Super Powers. She spends her days convincing others that Super Powers are real and helps people hone in on their own Super Powers.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Remain diligent in both business and personal growth. Don’t abdicate any important decisions.
Always show up and question things when it comes to raising your children.

  • 155: Erin and Kevin Jensen of Revel Furniture
    Tue, May 16, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Kevin and Erin come from Indiana. Married 18 years, they have three daughters, all moving into their teenage years.

Erin started her first company making hair ties for her girls. Three girls always losing hair ties was getting to be expensive. What started for her as a way to save money turned into a cottage business.

Kevin had his own construction company for 17 years before starting Revel Furniture. With his background, creating furniture pieces was a natural transition.

    A little about their business.

Ten years into marriage, three children, work, business, sports…all the things that take intimacy right out of a marriage. So, when Kevin and Erin went shopping for furniture that could help them spice up their sex lives, all they found were pieces that required a special locked room of its own, were cheaply made, and were just not appropriate in a home with children.

The quest to create elegant furniture with a sensual purpose began and Revel Furniture was born. While there was some hesitation in creating a “sex furniture” business, coming from a conservative background, they quickly realized there is a need in a segment of the population that is looking to enhance romance in a crazy, busy world.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Be patient with each other. Have respect. Give each other space.

In 2002, Tori started BLAQUELINE Entertainment which was an artist management company. After she and Michael got together, they created BLAQUELINE Entertainment Magazine focusing on celebrities and entrepreneurship.

In recent years and with Michael’s encouragement, the magazine is moving in a direction of empowering women to be confident, women entrepreneurs, and following women’s lives after domestic abuse.

Through the years, Tori and Michael have created several businesses, some successful, some not as much. But always together.

    Tue, Mar 14, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Samantha (Sam) and Scott Darling are history and travel buffs who spent a few years nomadic before opening the Uphill House B&B.

Scott is a graduate of New Mexico State University and Sam went to Ole Miss. They met in Arkansas while serving in the education corps. In 2012, Sam got the bug to become an entrepreneur and settled on a B&B in Virginia.

Sam and Scott are craft beer enthusiasts and love Virginia for their many craft beer breweries. The B&B is also located in the middle of wine country, so Scott and Sam have been working long and hard learning about the art of wine. They’ve also begun to explore a love of whiskey.

When they aren’t sleeping indoors, Scott and Sam enjoy camping along with hiking, kayaking, biking, and rock climbing. They also love to travel and enjoy the fact that with business partners they can really trust (Sam’s parents) they have plenty of opportunities to see the world.

    A little about their business.

After meeting and traveling around for the education corps from 2007 to 2014, Scott and Sam decided to settle down and open a business. Sam began to research possible businesses for her and Scott in 2012.

When Sam discussed some ideas with her parents, now also their business partners, David and Suzanne, they were interested in starting something new. In fact, the idea of a Bed & Breakfast was actually Suzanne’s.

The B&B was built in 2010 and purchased by Sam, Scott, Suzanne, and David in 2014. A more modern B&B, Uphill House sits in the middle of the history of the beginning of the United States. Sam and Suzanne serve as Culinary Operations and Housekeeping, Scott does Maintenance and Finance, and David is all things Tourism.

  • 142: Frank & Tessa Graham of IntellaTrinsic
    Tue, Feb 14, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Frank is a tennis buff, former tennis pro from Maine. Frank studied architecture and relocated to Colorado. He began to work for his former father-in-law and moved up in the company.

Tessa is originally from the Philippines and relocated to Colorado with her family. She was a contractor and interior decorator, but never crossed paths with Frank in their professional lives.

Frank and Tessa saw each other across a crowded room. Tessa knew right away she and Frank were meant to be and she set about getting her guy. That was 22 years ago and they have been together in business and life almost since the beginning.

    A little about their business.

Frank and Tessa began their entrepreneurial life together in network marketing. They succeeded in their first company and created a team of people, many of whom remained with them over the years. They saw success is several companies, not so much success in several more and eventually stepped out of network marketing.

A few years ago, they were approached by the CEO of a nutrition based company that was looking to rebrand and needed trainers with experience. First, Frank needed to lose about 80 pounds on the program and then they set about creating the new training for the branding.

It was from their years of experience and success in Network Marketing that Frank and Tessa decided to create IntellaTrinsic. Seeing a need for coaching and training throughout the Network Marketing world, Frank and Tessa work together to get those choosing the Network Marketing path to entrepreneurship on the right path.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

When you get into Network Marketing, be sure you have an excellent mentor. If there is something in your heart for the business, make it your own.

  • 140: Carmen & Darius Britt of Brade Street Properties
    Tue, Jan 31, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Carmen hails from our nation’s capital and Darius is from South Carolina. Carmen has a Master’s Degree in Communications and Darius is an Industrial Engineer, a career that led him to the path of owning his own real estate investing business.

Both enjoy travel and food and while Darius enjoys trying new foods, Carmen is a self-proclaimed HUGE FOODIE. Married 3 years and in business together for half of that time, Carmen and Darius relax by training for 5K runs and do a run a month.

    A little about their business.

Both Carmen and Darius knew from the start they wanted to be in business for themselves. Carmen, the creative half, has tried her hand at e-commerce as well as the fitness business being an avid runner. Darius, the industrial engineer studying time and money put that number crunching to use in research a great business for them.

Real Estate was the answer and the Britts started as wholesalers, going door to door talking to people who were on the verge of losing their homes in hopes of giving them a way out. Then they decided on rehabs but soon realized if you are wielding a hammer you can’t sit on a beach and earn money.

Taking all their knowledge and experience, Darius and Carmen created Brade Street Properties, a real estate investment firm that partners investors with flippers that need capital. Everyone gets what they want and need, including Darius and Carmen, who get their laptop lifestyle.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Your relationship comes first. The strength is in being together. Patience, patience, patience. Don’t force it. Be patient and strategic.

  • 139: Amanda Thompson and David De Jesus of Delightfully Vixen
    Tue, Jan 24, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Amanda was born in Louisiana, then moved to Oklahoma, Arizona, and Florida as a child. She returned to Arizona as an adult. David hails from Chicago and is a big sports fan.

Amanda received her Bachelor’s degree in Human Behavioral Studies and is working toward her PhD. in Transpersonal Counseling with an emphasis on sexual health.

David’s background is in retail. He has always wanted to go into business for himself and, with Amanda, began that journey 2 ? years ago. Amanda knew she did not want a traditional job, so together they created Delightfully Vixen.

    A little about their business.

It was a need for extreme flexibility in her schedule that started Amanda searching for something she could do. She found an under-served market in women who needed bra-fitting and lingerie and weren’t “average.” She added in her studies to create a safe space for women and couples to ask about various areas of sexual health.

David’s background in retail, his knowledge of apparel, and his knowledge of marketing has helped get this dream of both of them off the ground.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

When you make the decision to get into business for yourself, really know what business you are getting in to. Scout it out for more than just a few months and learn all you can.

  • 138: Bodie and Mitchell Campagna of Mitchell J Architecture
    Tue, Jan 17, 2017

    A little about our guests.

Bodie and Mitchell have been married since 1992 and in business together since 1998.

Bodie is a SoCal girl. A graduate of San Diego State University, Bodie actually started in the Real Estate business at the ripe old age of 12, helping her mother with rental properties.

Mitchell grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota where he studied architecture and engineering. Probably somewhere in the middle of a North Dakota winter, Mitchell decided he wanted to move to California and landed in Temecula.

Mitchell and Bodie have 2 sons. Bodie was very involved in various committees in their school as well as the varsity and JV football programs.

    A little about their business.

After working for a few architecture firms in southern California, Mitchell created his own company. Unfortunately, the real estate slow down in the 90’s saw him working for another firm during the day while building Mitchell J Architecture at night. In 1998, he went full time and full force into his own firm with Bodie joining and he hasn’t looked back.

In addition to traditional architecture work, they design wireless networks for all the major cell phone carriers and have worked with the Coast Guard, Border Patrol and Homeland Security. They are currently working on a dedicated First Responder Network for LA County.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

When you follow up and do what you say you will, you are ahead of the game and ahead of most people. Have integrity in all things. Do what you love and the money will follow.

  • 135: Rocky and Cheryl Detwiler of Samson Life
    Tue, Dec 13, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Rocky made it all, lost is all and made it all back again, bigger and better than before. After unknowingly getting into a Ponzi scheme, Rocky lost his money, home, and family. Things did not look good.

He rebuilt his life focusing on his own physical health first. When he began winning bodybuilding championships, Rocky took the words that inspired him and began to put them on clothing to inspire others.

Rocky credits all the wonderful things in his life to his attitude of gratitude. He is grateful for everything in his life now and grateful for the things to come as if they are here, right now.

Cheryl is a certified personal trainer who loves working with people. Her background is in business management and business finance. Cheryl and Rocky met when she was a trainer at Rocky’s gym.

Cheryl liked Rocky enough to volunteer to help him write his first book. With no book writing, publishing or editing experience, Cheryl dove right in. Good grades in English class gave her the courage she needed.

As they got to know each other, Cheryl decided she wanted to date Rocky, but knew his passion for his business meant she was going to become passionately involved as well.

    A little about their business.

As Rocky came out the other side of his darkest time, he used words of encouragement to keep himself going. He then created a clothing line around those empowering words and phrases.

More than just words, Rocky used a step by step program he created to bring into his life the exact things he wanted, including Cheryl.

After meeting Cheryl and working on the book together, Cheryl began working in Samson LIFE Challenge, the program Rocky developed.

Cheryl and Rocky quickly found a rhythm and found their skills perfectly complimented each other. They began building the online version of the Samson LIFE Challenge while working together on workshops, speaking engagements, and coaching.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Your relationship is more important than anything you are doing together. Put the relationship first. Be thankful and grateful for EVERY situation you have, good or bad.

After falling in love and moving back to the US, they started in Colorado before moving back to Wisconsin after their first child was born.

  • 131: Treat Your Business Cards Like Gold
    Thu, Nov 17, 2016

    About the show

Ever been to a networking event where someone in the crowd plays the card game? You know the game. It is where a business owner runs around the room as fast as they can and hands their business card to anyone who will take it. There is even a long-time business owner here in Phoenix who leaves business cards on any and every flat surface, including the top of urinals. We can’t make this stuff up.

What if your business cards were dipped in gold, would you throw them around to anyone and everyone? Of course not. You would hand them out to only the most deserving of people. There would be an etiquette to the way you give out your cards. On today’s show, we talk about handing out your cards and using them as a way to build relationships, not just add people to your email list without permission.

When you use your business cards for good, you create better relationships.

  • 130: Aaron and Jocelyn Freeman of New Power Couples
    Mon, Nov 14, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Aaron and Jocelyn both grew up to be very different people from the power couple they are today. Aaron was an athlete and kept his guard up when it came to women. Commitment was a foreign word and he even tried to break up with Jocelyn, even though he knew she is the one. Aaron studied to be an engineer, wrote a book with his wife and is now a published author, speaker, and social entrepreneur.

Jocelyn was self-conscious growing up. After spending too many years looking for external validation, she decided to go deep. Jocelyn spent several years transforming herself. She fell in love with who she became and when she stopped looking for validation from the outside, she was ready to meet her partner. Before writing a book with Aaron and creating their speaking and social entrepreneur business together, Jocelyn was a registered nurse.

    A little about their business.

Aaron and Jocelyn sat down and wrote a book together, The New Power Couple. Their mission is to get couples on the same page with a clear direction and purpose. They’ve created workshops and speak about being new power couples.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Everyone has a particular set of skills and a message. Find out what your purpose is and follow the dream. Not just for yourself, but for the people out there waiting for your message.

    About the show

Take a look at your business card or your signature on emails. What is your business email address? If you are still using a business email address that is your_business_name@aol.com or MyBusiness@Earthlink.net, you are projecting an amateurish and non-professional face to the world.

Whether you’re in business by yourself, with your sweetheart or you manage a few or few hundred people, email addresses can be the first impression someone has of your business.

  • 126: Stephanie Cummings and Tal Berke of Tula Industries - Shlocker
    Mon, Oct 31, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Stephanie’s background is all about getting things done. She has developed sales territories for billion dollar companies, bootstrap start-ups and companies in between. Stephanie studied at SUNY Fredonia and received her Bachelor’s degree. Since then, almost all her positions have been in the consumer products field.

When she isn’t working or hanging with her honey, Stephanie is on the beautiful beaches of Long Island with her nose in a book or practicing yoga.

Tal derives joy solving the world’s problems…those found in the minutiae of everyday life. Those annoying problems. Tal’s career started in real estate asset management and sales. But his family background and entrepreneurial upbringing was in manufacturing, exports and imports. Tal is a graduate of SUNY Stony Brook. When he isn’t woring or hanging out with Stephanie, Tal enjoys the beach or going to the gym.

    A little about their business.

Tal is all about developing great life hacks. The idea for Shlocker, a locker for the shower, came from his frustration with roommates and dorm-mates that stole his rather expensive shampoo (Tal has great hair!) and used his soap, which is just gross.

Shlocker is a portable locker for the shower that actually locks, too. With his manufacturing background and international connections, Tal created the product and began the manufacturing process. Stephanie’s strength lies in sales and marketing and she is bringing Shlocker to consumers through direct retail and wholesale to stores.

Shlocker is the first in a line of products designed to make everyday living easier and fun.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Respect boundaries, respect each other and keep things in perspective.

  • 125: Getting Ready for the Holiday Season
    Thu, Oct 27, 2016

    About the show

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Blessed Yule, Joyous Three Kings Day…did I get everyone?

November and December can be a great, fun, social time of the year. But if you are trying to be all things to all people, you’re likely to get something wrong. And insulting clients or potential clients at the most festive, and often most fiscally important, time of year can be dangerous. To your bottom line anyway.

We hate political correctness but we don’t want to be insulting. On today’s show, we talk about some ideas and things we’ve done to wish a “Happy-November-and-December-and-all-the holidays-and-hope-you-can-put-up-with-your-relatives,” to customers, family, and friends.

  • 124: Dr. Don Salyer, DC and Heather Havenwood of E2 Lab and Skinny Beam
    Mon, Oct 24, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Dr. Don enjoys powerlifting, staying young (and helping others do the same) the Dallas Cowboys. That’s an assumption because he was once their chiropractor, but we figure he does! Dr. Don is all about health and fitness.

Heather Havenwood has also become a fitness buff. She is a serial entrepreneur, health advocate and body builder. She, like Dr. Don is also a Texan.

Dr. Don and Heather became engaged in August, 2016 and we look forward to their upcoming nuptials and a very long life together.

    A little about their business.

Dr. Don is a chiropractor and Heather is an online entrepreneur running 3 companies, including one with Dr. Don. Heather’s marketing and promotion skills combined with Dr. Don’s ability to heal bodies, especially people over 40 as hormones start to go crazy, combined to create their healing center in Austin, Texas.

In addition to chiropractic, Dr. Don created a line of Anti-Aging, Life Extension and Weight Loss products. Along with the Skinny Beam laser weight loss machine, he is helping people regain youth. Heather has taken Dr. Don’s mission and the E2 Lab products to the masses. She has made his supplements the go-to product for body builders and has been building the line in the weight loss arena. Those who cannot make it into Dr. Don’s office to use the Skinny Beam can get results with the products.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Really narrow down what each person’s role is going to be in your business. Be open to accepting the other person’s point of view. Be OK with debating things out.

  • 123: The Pros and Cons of Working from Home
    Thu, Oct 20, 2016

    About the show

Business no longer needs to have an office or a storefront. Online stores have been replacing brick and mortar successfully. And many businesses choose not to have an office in a commercial building, but choose a home office instead.

If you’re considering moving your business back home or starting your business in your home, you have to weigh the pros and cons. And some situations can go either way. For example, with a home office, if your clients used to come to your office, you now have to choose – come to your home, go to their office or meet in the middle. Could be a pro or a con.

Listen in for other ideas about having a home office or keeping business outside of the home.

  • 122: Sharon and Sam Elswick of Holladay House Bed and Breakfast
    Mon, Oct 17, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Sharon grew up in New Jersey and then moved to Northern Virginia in High School. Sharon’s fondest memories revolve around food, family gatherings, travelling internationally and cooking. Her background and experience is vast, from retail jobs to an internship with the Supreme Court and a marketing company.

Sam grew up in the dry plains of West Texas, the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee and Central Virginia. Sam’s background is as a writer, historian and archeologist. A sci-fi fan who loves Marvel comics, Sam wanted to be Indiana Jones when he grew up. His background goes from being a dish washer in his teens to writing technical manuals and documents for Fortune 100 companies, published historical research and provided software training for the military.

    A little about their business.

Holladay House is a Bed and Breakfast built in the 1800’s. Filled with history from the beginning of the US, Sharon and Sam wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and decided that running a bed and breakfast hit all the buttons. Sam loves history, Sharon loves cooking for others and together they created Holladay House.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)
Continue to create personal experiences together outside of the business. Just like empty nesters try to reconnect after the kids are gone, keep creating personal experiences along the way so you don’t have to “reconnect.”

Have the self-confidence to go with your gut.

  • 120: Jan and Jeremy Strozer of the Good Enough Company
    Mon, Oct 10, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Jan grew up with a complete lack of spice in life. Her childhood was spent in non-diverse towns in West Virginia and Ohio. She does have strong values instilled by her family and her Western Pennsylvania roots and Pittsburgh Steelers and chipped ham hold strongly in her core values.

Spice came with Jeremy. With a foundation of stability, Jeremy brings a bit of unpredictability, new foods and flavors and an openness to new ways of living. Jeremy is a creative guy who loves to improvise, speak, teach, invent and play with Legos. A stint as a govy or government employee proved it wasn’t the career path for him.

Jan and Jeremy have been married for 13 years and have a 5 years old son. They have been in business together 2 years.

    A little about their business.

The Good Enough Empire is content creation and invention generation. Life is Comfy is their blog about 2 people with very different backgrounds coming together to live life, raise a son and create a business. The Empire also includes Jeremy’s works and books of Historical Flash Fiction.

The Good Enough Empire works with designers and production manufacturers to produce inventions that make life easier and more comfy.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Respect each other’s approaches to things. Both sides are needed for success.

  • 119: Should My Business Join a Barter Exchange
    Thu, Oct 06, 2016

    About the show

Today we talk about a topic we are very familiar with – barter (or trading). Way back late last millennium, we became members of a barter exchange with our then businesses. After a few years, we decided to launch our own barter exchange (check out the course we developed for anyone wanting to start an exchange at www.CertifiedBarterSpecialist.com) and finally, we designed software for barter exchanges to use. So we know barter.

But while the salesperson of your local barter exchange may tell you it is perfect for your business, it may or may not be. Or maybe you are thinking of doing a few direct trades with another business, and that can be great…or not.

In today’s episode we talk about what a barter exchange is, and we give you some guidelines to think about when deciding if it is right for your business. We also talk about trading directly with another business and what to look out for.

If you want to get more business, expand your business, offer more perks to your employees or you just want to treat yourself to a better lifestyle but don’t have the cash, take a listen to the show. Barter may help you achieve some of these goals.

  • 118: Laurie Burton and Dan Brumer of Laurie Burton Training
    Mon, Oct 03, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Laurie and Dan met 33 years ago on a freeway in Los Angeles. You know when that is the start of the relationship, it is not going to be conventional. Dan wanted to know if the sun roof in Laurie’s car was a plus. Turns out they got off the same exit and Dan asked Laurie out. They became business partners a year later, but didn’t get married until 2000. It was an on again, off again relationship in love, but stayed in business together the whole time.

    A little about their business.

Laurie created Laurie Burton Training. She has been on stage, television and film for over 30 years and has taught directing and acting at USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Dan’s extensive experience in workshops, creative councils and community building events was a great addition to Laurie Burton Training. The training went from always one-to-one to larger seminars and conferences.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Take some risks, take some chances, try something.

  • 116: Mike and Megan Knorpp of Knorpp & South
    Mon, Sep 26, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Mike and Megan met in college at Brigham Young University. They are married and have been together for 16 years and in business for 5 years.

Mike grew up in Meridian, Idaho and went to BYU to study family therapy. Realizing that family therapy was not a good fit (but he uses his education every day in their large family) he has been a window washer, in construction, in computer sales and now works with Megan.

Mike enjoys, running, hiking and hanging out with Megan.

Megan grew up near Houston, Texas and studied filmmaking at Brigham Young. Megan loves being a mom to her 9 children, five are adopted from China. She loves good food, traveling and hiking and, of course, hanging out with Mike.

Megan was a photographer, has had several blogs and has graphic prints on ETSY.com.

    A little about their business.

Megan is the original entrepreneur in the family. Most recently, she started with a network marketing company and built it to a point where Mike came on board with her. From that experience, Mike and Megan created Knorpp and South and began sharing their experiences on You tube. Their YouTube channel has become their business and the channel, Knorpp and South, chronicles their travels with their 9 children in an RV around the country.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

No matter what you do, something new can be scary. Scary and negative is part of it, so don’t stop because of fear. Fear means you are going in the right direction.

    About the show

There is television commercial where everything gets screwed up and the person that screwed up stands there and says “sorry” They go through a bunch of screw ups and the last person, a tattoo artist grates on me every time I hear the commercial. It’s not what she said, it is how she said it.

There are a lot of speech patterns and habits that can make us sound unprofessional or downgrade our message. We’re not talking about physical impediments, but actual bad habits picked up over the years that make a person sound less than professional.

  • 114: Damir Butkovic and Tea Maherl of DamirButkovic.com and Weblicious Solutions
    Mon, Sep 19, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Damir’s is all about experiences. Traveling (roaming) around Croatia, Slovenia, Portugal, Bali, Brazil, Australia to name just a few places, Damir decided his best course of action would be to get into marketing. Since there was no real “get rich quick” scheme that would allow him to be lazy the rest of his life, his passion for psychology led him to marketing.

Tea has a Masters of Law degree and had been practicing law for over 10 years. Tea, as part of the internet generation and her fascination with being able to connect with anyone, anywhere in the world prompted her to go from the world of law to internet and affiliate marketing. Also Tim Ferris’s “4 Hour Work Week book” was an inspiration.

    A little about their business.

Two sides of same internet marketing coin. Tea is more creative and tech and Damir is the strategist. Together, they can cover all the bases a client needs for their marketing and internet presence. Depending on what a client is looking for, they may find themselves at either company. But both are one.

Playing to their own strengths and knowing the other’s role allows Tea and Damir to work together and separately depending on the project.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Living and working together, you must have 5 minutes a day to sync up so you can continue to work uninterrupted.

In life and in business you cannot have a power trip against your partner.

  • 113: Don’t Over Complicate Things
    Thu, Sep 15, 2016

    About the show

How often do we find ourselves not completely enjoying our wins because we drove ourselves crazy getting there? When we over-complicate things we can add a level of stress to life that is completely unnecessary.

Here are some ideas to keep things simple so you can make good decisions and get things done faster and better.

    • Work from your happy place. If you are stressed, get grounded and centered.
    • Use bullet points. Just making a simple list, then going back later to fill in the details (or fill in as you go) can lay out an easy-to-follow plan.
    • Work from the end result, back.
    • Celebrate small victories as well as big ones.

When you simplify things, you can get more done in less time and more efficiently. So if you find yourself getting overwhelmed, stop, do one of the above or anything else that helps you see the big picture, and remove unneeded steps.

  • 112: Gila and Jon Kurtz of Dog is Good
    Mon, Sep 12, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Gila and Jon are married and have been together 27 years. They have a 19 year old daughter, Abby, and 2 fur-babies, a Japanese Chin named Henry (10) and a Labrador Retriever named BOLO (3). Gila’s life and philosophy has been inspired by dog. Live more simply, work more efficiently and play a lot harder.

Gila’s commitment to taking a dog’s approach to life resulted in her first book, Fur Covered Wisdom…A Dog Can Change the Way You See the World.

Jon is an easy-going, great leader who is committed to his success and the success of those around him. Jon was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy and went on to serve for just over 27 years. At the academy, Jon played baseball…but didn’t get called up by his team, The Angels of Anaheim. Still, he cheers them on every chance he gets and loves attending games. He stays in shape with intense fitness workouts and long distance biking.

How did they meet? Gila bought Jon with her Visa card while bidding on bachelors at an auction in 1988. True story.

    A little about their business.

With a military lifestyle and moving every 2 years, Gila always had a sales gig going on. She convinced Jon to adopt a Dalmatian pup and realized she really loved dogs and became a dog trainer. Not just any dog trainer, Gila immersed herself in the science of canine behavior and wherever they moved, Gila’s reputation as the “go to” dog trainer proceeded them…much to the disappointment of Abby, the third human Kurtz in the family.

Jon became involved in Dog is Good and upon retiring from the Navy, jumped in with both feet. He has even sworn off his triathlete training to devote time to building Dog is Good.

Dog is Good is a lifestyle brand for dog parents, human siblings of dogs and all dog lovers. They manufacture gifts, apparel, and home d?cor. Their website is filled with products (including a cat is good section for cat lovers) and a fun blog. Dog is Good also supports Dogs on Deployment, a vital military program.

  • 111: Johan Esteve and Paloma Pelaez of The Norwegian Star
    Thu, Sep 08, 2016

    A little about our guests.

What do you do when you’re on vacation and meet an interesting couple that is together 24/7, but doesn’t quite fit the usual requirement of owning a business together? You interview them anyway for the Thursday after vacation show.

Johan and Paloma work for Norwegian Cruise Line and they are the Cruise Next team on board the beautiful NCL Star. We met them at the Latitudes welcome party and we thought, wow, 24/7 and no place to hide. This should be good.

Paloma is from Mexico City, Mexico and Johan is from France. They met on an NCL cruise they worked together when Paloma was still on the Cruise Next team and Johan was in food and beverage. They dated, fell in love, had to work together to stay on the same ship and got married.

Although they are not the founders of NCL or even the Cruise Next program, they are beyond 24/7. When you work with your sweetheart and are sweethearts with your working partner, as these two are, that’s one kind of together all the time.

But when you live on a ship, you can’t just jump in the car and have a guys’ night out, and you communicate in a third language (Johan speaks French, Paloma speak Spanish, so they communication in English) it can put added stress on any relationship.

This is 24/7 like you can’t imagine and they are making it work well.

Get in Touch with Our Guests

Paloma and Johan work on Deck 7, mid-ship on the Norwegian Star at the moment. They can be reached through Norwegian Cruise Line’s corporate offices at 305-436-4000. Or just take a cruise and stop by their office.

  • 110: Regina and Rendel Bergman of Bridgeport Network
    Mon, Sep 05, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Regina and Rendel are newlyweds with a little experience. Regina became a widow after 44 years of marriage. Rendel was married twice before, one ending in divorce and the second in the passing of his wife.

A little older and a lot wiser, Rendel and Regina met, married, and went into business together. The adventure started a short 4 months ago. Rendel enjoys motorcycling, photography and is an artist and great cook. Regina likes to sew, craft, crochet and make jewelry.

Between them there are 8 children and numerous grandchildren.

    A little about their business.

Regina opened up a bed and breakfast with her late husband in 2011. She was coming off the 2-year sabbatical she took from business when her 13 year old, multi-state, multi-million dollar staffing company failed after the crash of 2008.

In 2014 Regina began studying to become a business and life coach. She called on her own experiences for her coaching and books.

Rendel became a chiropractor in 1994, was a co-owner of Diamond Spine Fitness and became a business partner and husband to Regina. Rendel has taken over all the maintenance and operations for the bed and breakfast. He is also the camera and video guy and works with Regina on the marriage retreats.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

  • 106: Elise and Scott Grice of Hey Sweet Pea
    Mon, Aug 22, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Elise is a California beach girl and Scott is an outdoor enthusiast perfectly content to be in the mountains. Hmmm. But marriage is most important to them, so they repeat their honeymoon at least once a year, and they do date night.

Elise has the strong branding background. She freelanced for 5 branding and design companies at the ripe old age of 17, worked for Sony pictures, then ventured out on her own.

Scott is the movie buff with over 500 titles in his very organized collection. Scott loves systems and automating. So much so that he took the stressful job of planning their wedding off Elise’s plate. Scott studied film-making and graduated at the height of the recession.

    A little about their business.

The offices of Hey, Sweet Pea are wherever Scott and Elise are. From their 2-month adventure through Europe to their current trek around the country in a 28-foot camper, Scott and Elise are constantly creating new courses for their clients.

Starting as a branding company working one-to-one with clients, Scott and Elise quickly saw how much this work took out of them. They came up with the idea to create group coaching for their branding clients which then morphed into their signature online offer, “My Own Irresistible Brand.”

They've done 4 launches of branding school and 11 launches of their mini-class with new classes in the works.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Focus a lot of energy on being intentional in your life. Your business is the tool that gets you to the life you want.

  • 105: Proactive vs. Reactive
    Thu, Aug 18, 2016

    About the show

How much time do you spend in your business creating systems and figuring things out as you go along? So often in business we become reactive and we don’t even realize it. Get a new client, put the on a contact list. Get a lead from an online ad, create something on the contact list to differentiate that a lead from the client. Oftentimes, entrepreneurs don’t think ahead.

When Barry and Catherine realized how much time they were spending being reactive and how much time in the day they were losing to getting and servicing clients, they realized they needed to stop, look at their systems and be proactive. Looking at all the services and thinking through what the client will need allows you to become proactive and create systems that make the back-end processes go faster.

On this episode we’ll share some examples of how you can spend your time being reactive and how much time you’re wasting in business with that model. Then we’ll touch upon some questions to ask yourself to create systems you can easily work with in your business.

  • 101: Know When to Add Staff
    Thu, Aug 04, 2016

    About the show

This is a sort of part 2 to last week’s “Stop Acting Like an Employee.” One of the toughest things to do as entrepreneurs is to stop trying to do everything yourself. As you grow you need to recognize what is yours to do and what is someone else’s to do.

When you struggle to do something, like bookkeeping or copywriting, that is not your strong suit and that takes you longer, you aren’t saving money. In fact, you’re losing a ton.

In this episode we talk about some things you should look at that you’re doing now that may fit better to outsource or to hire an employee. If you aren’t sure it’s time, this episode can help.

  • 99: Stop Acting Like an Employee
    Thu, Jul 28, 2016

    About the show

Michael Gerber described it best in the E-Myth books. Just because you’re great at something and you start a business, you didn’t necessarily make the jump from employee to entrepreneur.

In today’s episode we explore a bit about getting out of the employee mentality you left behind so you can start working on your business, not in your business.

When you are starting out and still the chief cook and bottle washer, be sure to document your activities for the next person you hire. Stop talking about what you can’t do. You’re the boss, you can do anything you want. Start asking if your choices are smart ones. And a few more tips.

In order to grow, you need to stop being a control freak who thinks only you can do it right. The right people are out there. Find and train them.

  • 90: Libby and Andy Banks of The Law Office of Libby Banks
    Mon, Jun 27, 2016

    A little about our guests.

It’s almost as if Libby and Andy were meant to meet and get married. Both Libby and Andy moved around a lot while growing up. Andy lived in Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Utah and Oklahoma growing up. Libby lived in Georgia and went to college and law school at the University of Kansas. Libby and Andy met when they were 28 and both living in Oklahoma. But in high school, both Libby and Andy lived in Georgia, went to competing high schools, and both hung out at the same mall. Andy shopped there and Libby worked there.

Libby and Andy have 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, the youngest. Their daughter is off to college, one son is back home again and the oldest is out of the house for good. They think.

Both enjoy RV camping, reading and riding their quad in the cooler-than-Phoenix White Mountains. Andy still gets together with his fraternity brothers a few times a year for golf and possible mayhem.

    A little about their business.

Libby has wanted to be an attorney since she was 11 and she still carries that passion with her. Libby is a member of the Oklahoma, Kansas and Arizona bars as well as the Tenth Circuit, Fifth Circuit and US Supreme Court.

Andy’s career has been in sales and marketing. He holds a marketing degree from ASU and an MBA from Oklahoma City University.

Two years ago, when Libby decided to focus her practice solely on estate planning, Libby and Andy decided it would be great to work together. Andy helped rebrand the firm and handles the marketing and all things promotional for the Law Firm. He also works with Libby in the capacity of paralegal.

They made the decision at the outset that if working together threatened their wonderful marriage of 29 years in any way, they would stop. So far, its been great.

Say what “hat” your wearing. Are you speaking to each other with your “spouse hat” on or your “business hat” on? It is so important not to jump between the two.

Cristina loves working with children and animals and was a teacher for a number of years. She also enjoys photography and traveling to new, fun places.

Drew grew up with entrepreneurial parents and has been surrounded by couples in business and in love. His dad was his sports inspiration and his mom was his outdoors inspiration. His parents also instilled a deep faith in him as well as the importance of living a balanced life.

When Drew met Cristina and figured out she might be the one, finding out she enjoyed travel and the outdoors sealed the deal. They hope to start a family in the future (although they won’t say how long we have to wait!) Right now, they enjoy building their business, traveling and fixing up the new house they bought and making it into a home.

    A little about their business.

Drew started out working with Jackson Kayak. He is a part owner and designer of fishing kayaks. From there he created the TV show “Hooked on Wild Waters” and started a kayak fishing tournament trail company called “River Bassin Tournament Trail.” Both companies fall under the umbrella of Deep Creek Ventures.

When Drew and Cristina met and started talking about marriage, Drew asked Cristina if she could see herself quitting her teaching position to travel and work with Drew to be part of Deep Creek Ventures. Cristina said YES to both and a third YES to the marriage proposal.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Skill sets should determine who does what in the business. You always need to be learning, adapting and changing.

  • 87: Make a Plan
    Thu, Jun 16, 2016

    About the show

Too often in life we come up with the most brilliant ideas, but we never see them to fruition. Because we don’t have a plan to get us there. No blueprint to guide us to how to build our dream.

Having a plan is paramount to actually achieving your goals. On the show, the truth about our lives with and without a plan. Hint – plans totally rock.

Want to take the challenge? Create a simple plan, a list if you will and see what happens. Draw a line down the page. At the top, write your goal, dream, desire. Then on the left write down 20 things you can do to get you to your goal. No time lines or elaborate plans or details. Just 20 things you can do (Google something, make a call, take a class).

On the right side of the paper, write 20 things you need to have “happen.” Not things you can do or influence. Just things it would be nice to have happen. Like “get invited to a party where this person I want to meet will be.” Don’t harp on the right side or try to force the situation. Just do the things you wrote down that you can do.

Tell us what happened after this very simplistic written plan…

  • 85: The Cure for the Summertime Blues
    Thu, Jun 09, 2016

    About the show

Each year at this time, you’ll hear the excuses over and over again. “Business slows down in the summer.” “It’s a bad time to try and get new business.” “Everyone is on vacation.”

There are few people that you want to work with or gain as new customers that are on vacation the entire summer. And yes, it may be a little tougher to get in touch with people because they may be going away or have shorter summer hours.

But the bills come in no matter the season, so you need to build and work your business no matter the season. In this episode we explore some ideas to keep business moving. And we talk about the negative attitudes you need to avoid this time of year.

  • 84: Shawn Gibson and Robert Jones of United Health Association
    Mon, Jun 06, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Robert and Shawn recently became engaged when Shawn took advantage of Sadie Hawkins Day and asked Robert to marry her. Robert and Shawn have been together a little over a year and have 4 children between them.

Shawn is a third generation Las Vegas native who relocated to Phoenix, AZ back in 2005. She is an outdoor person and lives life through an open mind, trying new things and viewing obstacles as opportunities.

Robert was born in Kansas, raised in Texas, moved to Southern California before settling in Arizona. His background is incredibly varied – from the USMC to a Chanel Boutique manager and into the world of tech, real estate and the nutraceutical/pharmaceutical field. He was even a juggler at the Renaissance Festival.

    A little about their business.

An idea started in 2009, Robert waited out contractual obligations and finding the right partner (Shawn) to launch United Health Association in January of 2016.

United Health Association is an association for practitioners of complementary and alternative health care. Originally conceived to be a directory, the idea grew to become a national association and the first of its kind. UHA is designed to give a national voice to alternative health care while providing the public with education and an understanding of the many modalities other than traditional western medicine for healing.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Stop. Think. Discuss. All problems or roadblocks can be resolved and a new way of handling situations can be created from those three steps.

  • 83: Get Involved in your Industry’s Association
    Thu, Jun 02, 2016

    About the show

Almost every industry has an association, or several, that help define the industry standards and in some cases, help shape policy and law.

Many businesses belong to their industry’s association, but few ever do more that write the annual check to cover membership. In today’s episode we discuss why you should become involved in the association, what they can do for you and how you can put yourself ahead of your competition, even when you work alongside each other.

If there are things about your industry you don’t like, laws that need to be changed regarding your industry or regulations that need to be put into play, you can’t complain unless you get involved.

  • 82: Mark and Mina Fies of Synergy Design & Construction
    Mon, May 30, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Mark and Mina could not have had more different backgrounds growing. They say opposites attract and these two started differently and ended up on the same page building a great business together.

Mina was the daughter of a long haul, hippie truck driver, her mom. They lived someplace different every year for the first 9 years of her life. Tragedy struck and Mina lost her mother in an accident. It was these experiences that would lead her to help others create the safe space she would create for herself and start Synergy Design & Construction. Mina likes yoga and meditation, feng shui (great for changing a home’s energy) and writing poetry.

Mark grew up on a golf course in Pennsylvania. Mark had a golf club in his hand as soon as he could walk. Maybe even before that. His dad was a golf pro and his mother was also in the golf business. Mark loves the outdoors, a good glass of wine and also volunteers as a coach for their local Special Olympic athletes

Together, Mark and Mina enjoy playing golf, watching movies and traveling.

    A little about their business.

In 2008, after the economic downturn, and just 3 months after getting married and moving Mina’s 91-year-old grandmother in with them, Mina decided to start Synergy Design & Construction. And she convinced Mark to come on board for the ride.

Mina has been in real estate and the design field since 1994. She is passionate about helping people create a space that nurtures and empowers clients through a methodical and holistic approach to design.

Mark has a strong background in structure and process development. He has managed the operations of six multi-million dollar facilities for two Fortune 500 Companies. Mark has also served as past President and current member of the Board of Directors for their area’s chapter of NARI – the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Synergy Design and Construction has created several unique tools and systems to help those remodeling create an experience and end result that is satisfying without being stressful including www.RenovationRoadmap.com, a guide for anyone doing home renovations.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Have respect for each other’s viewpoints. No emails or texts after 7 pm and take technology-free vacations.

    Thu, May 26, 2016

    About the show

Starting out in business can sometimes be a slow climb. But when does it stop being a business you are building and move into the realm of “just a hobby?”

The IRS has very clear guidelines (as clear as the IRS can be) and there are other signs that say “you might be holding on to a hobby.” So learn to tell the difference and then decide what the best course of action is for you.

    Mon, May 23, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Al and Michelle met on a last minute blind date in Detroit. After relocating to Arizona with her family, Michelle and Al stayed in touch and were soon engaged. Al has a military background and served on the Tempe police force for 22 years. Michelle was an LPN (nurse). After their daughter Dawn was born, Michelle started Special Moments in 1984 as a cake designer and grew the business from there.

Al and Michelle have 2 children. Both work in the family business.

    A little about their business.

Let’s start by saying we just recently used Special Moments Catering for an event here in Phoenix, AZ and they were amazing.

Michelle started the company in 1984 and Al helped out from the beginning. In 1996 Al took over the management portion as the CEO. Dawn and Brad, their children, started working in the family business and worked their way up to VP positions.

Special Moments Catering and Events does catering for all kinds of events and all sizes.

    Thu, May 05, 2016

    About the show

The best ideas you have may come to you at the weirdest of times. And it doesn’t matter how young (or old) you are. You’re not going to remember the great idea you had unless you write it down.

Carrying an idea book and using it consistently can help develop a faraway thought into a clearly achievable goal and even give you the steps to get there. You can use a notebook and pen, the voice recorder on your phone or one note. Just get those ideas out.

Review the notes, notice the patterns, make the connection and create the plan. No idea is too wild and crazy. One idea leads to the next.

    A little about our guests.

Mike and Ariane have been together for 20 years, been in business together for 7 years and have 7 children ranging in age from 15 years old to 6 months.

Both Ariane and Mike are engineers. Mike is an aerospace engineer and Ariane is a mechanical engineer. Both enjoy playing hockey, which has helped Ariane in delivering all 7 children without any meds, 6 born at home and one delivered by Mike alone.

Both Mike and Ariane have varied interests including gardening, skiing, rollerblading and drinking bourbon.

    A little about their business.

Storymix is all about telling a story, your story, through user-generated content. Storymix started as “Reeltime DVD,a home video editing company. After a launch party where hundreds of friends and family said what a great idea this was and they would be customers, Ariane received 2 orders for video editing.

Mike was studying lean start-up business practices and came into Reeltime DVD to help the company pivot and become Storymix Media. Before going forward, Mike and Ariane decided to look at what market would be best by studying potential clients. They put together what Mikes calls the ugliest wedding website ever and created an MVP – Minimum Viable Product study to find their direction.

From this discovery process the main idea that became Storymix Media was created.

  • 73: Ask for Help
    Thu, Apr 28, 2016

    About the show

You can’t do everything all by yourself. Even if you are in business with your sweetheart, and especially if you are in business by yourself, you cannot do it all yourself. Neither can the two of you do everything needed.

Asking for help is sometimes seen as a sign of weakness. In business we take what we were taught in life. “Do it yourself.” And that could lead to spending too much time or not doing it right. Time and money wastes can destroy a business.

Asking for help can put you far ahead of your competition. Anything from peer groups to SCORE, we explore ways and resources for business owners to look for and take advantage of. After all, you don’t know everything and you don’t even realize all the things you don’t know. Ask for help!

  • 70: Dee and Angie Cowger of Custard Stand Food Products and The Custard Stand
    Mon, Apr 18, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Dee and Angie married in 1987. They were high school sweethearts and after all these years they remain in love and in a thriving and delicious business together. They have 3 children, 2 daughters and a son. One daughter is involved in the restaurant and another is looking to open her own salon. Their youngest son is attending college.
This is not Dee and Angie’s first business together. They have had several successful businesses together and separately. They love being with their family. Dee enjoys golf and hunting and fishing. Angie loves relaxing and reading and cooking for the family. They bring business along with them with even on vacation.

    A little about their business.

Custard Stand Food Products and The Custard Stand restaurants have been around for 25 years. Started from an old family recipe, Dee and Angie went from one custard stand to a restaurant, food products and franchises.

Growing up, Dee and Angie loved to go to a walk-up dairy bar in our hometown that served the best hot dogs and ice cream ever. In 1991, they decided to open The Custard Stand, a walk-up dairy bar, and bring back those items and more. Over the years, many customers wanted to buy their hot dog chili so they took it to the retail market.

Recently, Dee and Angie appeared on Shark Tank, and while they did not get a deal, their business received the “Shark Tank bump” and had some great exposure.

Dee and Angie were kind enough to send us some of their hotdog chili and chili soup. We ate some as soon as we received it and WOW – it is delicious.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Calculate your risk and take the right risk for your business. When someone says “NO,” ask why. Be persistent and find out what the no was about. That will help you improve and grow.

Believe in your product and what you are doing. Be passionate about what you do.

    Mon, Apr 11, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Mike and Suzie met in college and became sweethearts and best friends. Mike got into fitness when he was deployed to Afghanistan is 2010. IT kept him strong and sane during a very tough time.

Suzie was a bit overweight, having migraines, zero energy and mood swings. She looked to nutrition as a way to feel better. Mike came along on the research ride because, even though he worked out and on the outside he looked great, he was tired, had brain fog and frequent colds.

Mike and Suzie love to travel and just can’t stay in one place. They’ve created a life for themselves that lets them travel and coach on fitness and nutrition.

Mike and Suzie are newlyweds, married a mere six months.

    A little about their business.

Mike and Suzie started their business about a year out of college. They determined early on that the traditional corporate job just wasn’t for them. With the research and trial and error in college, they created an online fitness and coaching business that allowed them to travel.

They have no entrepreneurial experience or training. So they approach their business like they approached their own health journey. Learn and go forward.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Take care of your health. Prioritize your health, body, mind and spirit. Take 100% responsibility for your actions.

  • 67: Does Your Tagline Make People Say – Duh!?
    Thu, Apr 07, 2016

If your networking tagline or your presentation closing line makes people think (or say out loud) DUH!, you better think of a better closing.

We don’t mean “duh” as in “I don’t understand.” If the line you deliver or the close you make has people thinking or saying “The is the very least I expect from you,” then you best come up with all the things you do beyond the bare minimum.

A follow up on Episode #65, this show explores the frustrating things you say like, “I always take great care of your referrals,” and how to say something different that shows people how you really are different and go a step or 10 above.

If your tagline is a clich? or makes people say “DUH!,” you need to listen to this episode.

  • 66: Michelle & Adam Carey of AdamAndMichelleCarey.com
    Mon, Apr 04, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Michelle and Adam both grew up in California, but not near each other. Michelle grew up in South Lake Tahoe while Adam grew up in the Cowboy Capital of the World, Oakdale.

Michelle is creative and loves a great cup of coffee and bargain shopping. Adam is all about the outdoors. He loves camping, fishing, dirt biking and anything outside. Both are very involved in their church.

Michelle and Adam’s pure joy comes from daughter Hannah Grace who is almost 2 years old.

    A little about their business.

Adam has always been an entrepreneur. As a child he would create opportunities for himself. In his early 20’s he jumped onto his first real entrepreneurial adventure by joining a network marketing company. He began to speak and train others and realized his love for that type of business.

Michelle joined Adam’s team shortly after he started in the company to get him to like her (true story.) They started working together when they first starting dating, continued the relationship and business and eventually got married. They found they really enjoyed both being entrepreneurs and each other.

Michelle is the creative partner, Adam nurtures the idea and together they have created a training company for people in network marketing. Starting with the book “Don’t be That Guy in Network Marketing,” Michelle and Adam are now coaching, training and creating more training in the etiquette arena for those entrepreneurs in network marketing.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Know your partner’s love language. Don’t try to be each other’s boss. Be accountable to each other, but don’t try to boss each other. Work in your strength zone.

  • 65: Stop Saying "Great Customer Service"
    Thu, Mar 31, 2016

From the "things that annoy us that business owner’s say" file comes the line "and I give great customer service." That’s generic and a little insulting to your customers.

If you worked for someone and didn’t give great customer service, even if the customer is your company, you would be out of a job. And as a business owner, if you didn’t give great customer service you would be out of business. You need to breath and eat to stay alive. You need to give great customer service to stay in business.

Today’s show is about focusing on the things you do better or different than your competition. Make yourself stand out with the things you do that are unexpected or above and beyond. Everyone gives great customer service. Or so they think. Tell people what that phrase means for your business.

    Mon, Mar 28, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Lisa is the artist and David is the scientist. Lisa is a fine artist in the music industry and David is a Natural Medicine Expert. But it isn’t as left brained/right brained as it seems. Each has a healthy dose of the other’s qualities.

Lisa and David have been together for 18 years, are married and their children are the fur-baby and feather-baby variety. They are pet parents to Lightening the Wonderdog and parrots Zeus and Venus.

    A little about their business.

Lisa had a very successful career as a vocalist. She constantly pushes the envelope of the music industry and success. David is a Natural Medicine Expert. He had a highly successful naturopathic and acupuncture practice. As a favor to his patients who kept asking for an anti-aging formulation.

As David and Lisa started coming together and getting serious, they realized their current career schedules just wouldn’t work. They began investigating the possibility of selling the product David developed for his patients, Doc Wellness Anti-Aging Supplement.

Lisa stepped away from her career and David sold his two practices in order to devote full-time in developing and selling their supplements. Jumping in with both feet, they have built a very successful product and business.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Follow your fascination. Pursue them with all the energy you can muster. Do what you love and be a contributor to life.

  • 63: Pivoting vs. Failure
    Thu, Mar 24, 2016

Pivoting seems to be the new, hip word to talk about the next level of your business. But is pivoting just a newer, better way of saying “I’m failing.” And is there anything wrong with failure?

We explore our definition of pivoting, failure (it isn’t a bad thing) and ending. We talk about creating definitions that don’t make you feel like a complete loser. And we come up with ways to figure out when to admit you’ve failed (get up, keep going or try something new), when to pivot and when to just end something.

Get a better idea of how to look at your current situation and then move forward in a positive way.

  • 62: Josh & Jenny Solar of Hello Happiness Card Co.
    Mon, Mar 21, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Josh and Jenny have been sweethearts since high school. In fact Josh says he has always known he never wanted to work for anyone else, except Jenny. Josh is the big dream doer, joy seeker and family adventurer while Jenny is the adventure seeker.

Together with their 3 children, there is probably never a dull money at the Solar household. Together19 years and married for 13, they live in gratitude and live mindfulness.

    A little about their business.

Josh has a Master’s in Entrepreneurship – super creative, ideas guy and a bit all over the place. Jenny has a Master’s in Accounting – structured, to do lists and solid ground. Their opposite-ness keeps the company moving forward without floating away.

Josh and Jenny started out in photography. That became a blog, The Happy Family Movement which then morphed into Hello Happiness Cards. With failures as learning lessons, they are committed to moving forward for the values they believe in…time freedom and quality time with their kids.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

If you have a thought or idea that keeps coming up, don’t just dismiss it. If it won’t leave you alone, you need to look into it. Share the ideas with each other.

  • 59: Why you should back up your computers
    Thu, Mar 10, 2016

We recorded today's show on the day we came home abruptly from a networking meeting because our alarm company called. We were broken in to. Our computers were not stolen (lots of other stuff was.) But what if they had been? What would you do if the computer you use for your business was stolen, lost or died?

On today’s episode we talk about taking precautions, backing up and putting into place systems to protect and save your data.

  • 58: Dianne and Alan Collins of QuantumThink Coaching and Consulting
    Mon, Mar 07, 2016

    A little about our guests.

Dianne and Alan have been together for 28 years and married for 26. They first met when Dianne was unregistering for a transformational seminar. Alan was working at the seminar and talked her back into going. The rest, as they say, is a sweet history.

Dianne and Alan love living on the beach overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Since they married, they continue a daily practice of reading spiritual passages to each other after breakfast each morning. They love to play tennis and are tennis fans as well. They also love to swim, are movie fans and enjoy family and friend time.

They support the Distinguished Speakers Series at the Florida International University’s Program in the Study of Spirituality. They truly live what they teach.

    A little about their business.

Dianne trademarked the 21 principles she and Alan teach called QuantumThink in 1997. But these principles and ways of being developed over years of study, practice and discovery.

Dianne and Alan consult with and teach the principles of QuantumThink to the leaders in some of the world’s leading corporations as well as celebrities, homemakers, artists, students and evolutionaries.

QuantumThink is a way for the world to take the integrated knowledge of Eastern and Western mastery traditions and live them daily instead of just knowing them conceptually.

Dianne and Alan are teaching the way to change the world through “quantum” modern wisdom.

One piece of advice (the nutshell version)

Take ownership of everything you do. Own your relationships 100% for each of you. It isn’t a 50/50 proposition – It is 100% from each of you.
