Parts of Speech in a nutshell

We use language for communicating our ideas and thought to others using a language. We use words to express our ideas. The words are used ina perfect order in complete sentences.

Learning about Parts of speech is essential and interesting in learning basic grammar. Parts of speech deals with the role or part played by a word in a sentence. There are 8 parts of speech in U.K based grammar. They are noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection.

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or an idea. The main types of nouns are proper noun, common noun, collective noun, material noun and abstract noun.

A pronoun is the word used instead of a noun. The major types of pronouns namely personal pronoun, possessive pronoun, relative pronoun, demonstrative pronoun and interrogative pronoun.

An adjective is a word that qualifies a noun or pronoun. The major types of adjectives are proper adjective, possessive adjective, adjective of quality, adjective of quantity, numerical adjective, demonstrative adjective and distributive adjective.

A verb says something about the subject. It can be an action, event or status of an event. We have discussed about action verbs, stative verbs, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, modal verbs, regular verbs, irregular verbs and phrasal verbs.

An adverb is word that qualifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. The major adverbs are adverb of time, adverb of place, adverb of frequency, adverb of manner, adverb of degree and quality, adverb of reason, adverb of affirmation and negation, interrogative adverb and relative adverb.

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun, pronoun or phrases with the remaining part of the sentence. There are 3 types of prepositions. They are prepositions of time, prepositions of place and prepositions of movement.

A conjunction is a word used to join two or more words, phrases, clauses or sentences. There are 3 types of conjunctions namely subordinating conjunctions, coordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions.

An interjection is a word or phrase used to express feeling rather than meaning.
