In his own irreverent style Dan Carlin attacks the historical record in the Hardcore History Podcast. Each month, Carlin selects a different topic or person in history, spanning from the ancient to the present depending upon his mood, and brings his humorous and sometimes provocative opinion to bear on it. The editorial tone Carlin takes is usually funny, and while some of what he argues is controversial, his command of the subject can never be questioned.

Steppe Stories-The Afghan girl

The excellent podcast on the Scythians (soft, not hard "c") mentions the now world-famous picture of the Afghan girl who appeared on the cover of National Geographic. Her name is Sharbat Gulam and she was actually photographed in 1984 (not the 70s as stated in the podcast) and rediscovered 17 years (and four daughters) later by Steve McCurry, the photographer who captured her haunting eyes. Her story is that of a proud and tragic people.

The most exciting day of most months is when I plug in my iPod and find a new "Hardcore History" podcast snaking through the various tubes of the internets into my iTunes... I save them for when I go to bed and immerse myself in Mr. Carlin's engaging, insightful, entertaining and informative ability to connect the infinite dots... this podcast will teach you more about current events than any news channel. History repeats, and we are lucky to have him to remind us of that fact. A 10!

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is an extremely original history podcast in that it takes the listener through the facts and engages in analysis, comparative narration and as such makes a unique attempt to connect us with history

Interesting and informative

The "talk-show" format keeps me gripped to the topic like no other podcast I've listened too. Subjects are interesting and discussion is paced in a way that doesn't result in mental fade-out. If Mr. Carlin is reading from a prewritten script, you wouldn't know it by his presentation. The only possible complaint I might have would be that his shows do not come out frequently enough.
