In the Very Vocabulary Podcast, the host presents about 10 or 11 words and their definitions, plus an example sentence for each word. This 5-minute program is intended to help listeners improve their vocabulary for tests, general knowledge, etc.

The words that the host chose for this particular show were perfect for the intermediate level that he targets, and therefore I think you can probably learn a lot if you are able to remember the definitions and sprinkle your conversation with these new words.

I thought the host spoke a bit too fast considering the topic of the podcast. I know that if I were serious about learning new vocabulary words, I would probably want to write them down in a notebook, along with their definitions. I don't think there's really a chance to do that with this podcast, though, because he's going too fast for listeners to write anything down.

Overall, I give it 3.5 stars, and will probably listen again.

This podcast strives to improve the listener’s understanding and comprehension of the English language on an intermediate level by focusing on a few words at a time. The host, Ben Westerman, gives the definition and sample sentences using the word in appropriate situations. He also gives recommendations of several books to continue the listener’s education.

While enjoying the idea of this new learning tool, I found it difficult to wait for the rambling host, Ben Westerman, to actually begin the word/definition/examples part of the podcast. There were a lot of pauses which proved to be very distracting from the purpose of learning as well. He is very forthcoming about not being a professional and he proves this point very well.

The concept of learning new words and their definitions on a daily basis is a wonderful thing! While the execution of this podcast was not very good, the host’s intentions to bring an improved vocabulary were impressive.

Very Vocabulary Podcast by Ben Westerman is a great broadcast idea gone horribly wrong in execution. I think listeners should take the host at face value when he says that he is not a professional. He actually yawns at places in the middle of the broadcast. One might actually forgive him for this if the content of the broadcast were put forward in an interesting and informational manner. But here too, the host fails. He reads words and definitions as if with a dictionary in front of him.
Foreign students, ESL students and other professionals who stand to benefit from a podcast of this nature will be disappointed. One wishes that the host gives more examples for each new word that he explains.
I give this podcast a 1.5 rating, that too fo r the idea and the effort involved. People wishing to brush up their vocabulary must look elsewhere for the time being, at least.

Great American Vocabulary Podcast. I don't know what the woman from India is talking about... he is a student. His shows are a fantastic idea and well executed. He is not a professional broadcaster but interesting to listen to. Where else can you get quirky English vocab for free?

I liked this podcast because it wasn't a formal narrator robotically reading you definitions of words. Mr. Westerman isn't afraid to screw up or to make a joke and he goes through words that you've probably heard of but might not know the definitions to. It's the only podcast of it's kind that I can find and I'm glad he's done us the service of a free vocabulary podcast because it's something that everyone can use.
