The panel will explore how the American food system is shaped by centralization in production, consumption and economic cycles.

Gill argues that itâs better to proactively build ethically healthy organizations â not just for risk management but for competitive advantage and organizational excellence. He reviews his six vital components and four key processes.

Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and former Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Author: Commonwealth Club of California Wed, Aug 06, 2008
SHIRLEY ANN JACKSON, Ph.D., President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and former Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
YOU CANâT GET THERE FROM HERE: WHY THE U.S. NEEDS A GLOBAL ENERGY SECURITY ROADMAP
Prominent energy expert, Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., will discuss the restructuring of global energy markets now underway, and the risk of the U.S. being left behind because we lack a comprehensive global energy security roadmap. The former chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will outline her vision of the necessary components of a comprehensive U.S. energy plan that addresses both energy security goals and the linked concerns of climate change and sustainability.
Dr. Jackson says the U.S. needs an intensive focus on the problem, with leadership from the top to orchestrate participation across the board from government, corporations, universities, and individuals. She warns of a misplaced focus on "energy independence" rather than the correct goal of energy security and sustainability. Noting the importance of the energy issue in the context of the 2008 elections, she urges a national call to action, saying "global energy security is the âSpace Raceâ of this millennium."
Jackson views these issues from an unusual range of venues; as president of Rensselaer - a leading technological research university, as former chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (1995-99), as co-chair of the Council on Competitivenessâs âEnergy Security, Sustainability, and Innovationâ initiative, as a member of the Council on Foreign Relationsâ Independent Task Force on Climate Change, and as a member of the Board of the NYSE-Euronext, Marathon Oil, FedEx, IBM, PSEG, and Medtronic. A theoretical physicist, she has held senior leadership and advisory positions in government, industry, research, and academe, with a particular focus on global energy security and the national capacity for innovation. She is âperhaps the ultimate role model for women in science in America,â according to Time Magazine.

Scott McClellan,
Former White House Press Secretary (2003-2006); Communication Strategist; Author, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House Washington's Culture of Deception
On the heels of his testimony to the House Judiciary Committee former Bush administration insider, Scott McClellan, TELLS ALL about his experiences as White House press secretary during the first three years of the Iraq War. He will share his views on where he thinks the President and his top aides veered off course on Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, Washingtonâs bitter partisanship, and the last two contentious presidential campaigns. Reflecting on mistakes of the past, McClellan will look to the future and discuss the lessons Americans need to learn as they choose a new leader in the upcoming election.
McClellan served as White House Press Secretary from 2003-2006, and was a staunch defender of Bush policies during this time. In his new 2008 memoir What Happened, he strongly criticizes the Bush administration, accusing the President of "self-deceptionâ and asserting that the administration relied on an aggressive "political propaganda campaign" instead of truth to sell the Iraq war. His book also criticizes the press for being too accepting of the Presidentâs policy on Iraq.
As the 25th White House Press Secretary, McClellan was preceded by Ari Fleischer and succeeded by Tony Snow. He served as Bushâs traveling press secretary during the 2000 Presidential election. In addition to working as campaign manager for his mother, the Texas State Comptroller, McClellan served as the Chief of Staff to a Texas State Senator.
He received his B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin.

George Lakoff, Co-founder/Sr. Fellow, Rockridge Institute; Author, The Political Mind
Leading linguistic and political analyst, George Lakoff, will explain how language can be used as a critical tool in progressive politics, describing how our brains work in relation to society, why language is so important, and how Democrats can use this knowledge to their advantage to win the November elections. Lakoff believes that progressives have been fighting a losing battle in America for the last 30 years because, he says, the majority of citizens vote against their own self interests.
Lakoff is a professor of cognitive linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1972. He has published many scholarly articles and books including The Political Mind (2008) as well as the influential book, Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think (2002). Although some of his research involves questions traditionally pursued by linguists, he is best known for his ideas about the centrality of metaphor to human thinking, political behavior and society. He is particularly famous for his concept of the "embodied mind," which he has written about in relation to mathematics. In recent years he has applied his work to the realm of politics, exploring this in his books. He is the co-founder and senior fellow of the progressive think tank, the Rockridge Institute. He previously taught at Harvard University and the University of Michigan. He has been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and a Visiting Professor at the Ăcole des Hautes Ătudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (1995) and the Linguistics Society of America Summer Institute at the University of New Mexico (Summer, 1995).

MARY TILLMAN, Author, Boots on the Ground by Dusk: The Life & Death of Pat Tillman
The Integrity of Truth
Mary Tillman, the mother of fallen solider Pat Tillman, NFL football star and summa cum laude graduate of Arizona State will chronicle her familyâs harrowing journey through the maze of bureaucracy, red tape and cover-ups to learn the true circumstances of Patâs death. She will also recount memories of him as a loving son, brother, husband, friend and teammate.
Mary Tillman has brought international attention to the war and its consequences after the horrifying discovery her son had died mysteriously while fighting in Afghanistan. He decided to enlist after the September 11th attacks and was killed in Afghanistan when he was shot multiple times by his comrades. The Tillmans believe partly because of the timing of Patâs death, a week after the Abu Ghraib abuses became public, the army told them and the nation he had been shot by enemy fire. The army later told the family he was shot by âfriendly-fireâ but military investigations have given differing and incomplete reports. Tillman told the Washington Post, âThis lie was to cover their image. I think there's a lot more yet that we don't even know, or they wouldn't still be covering their tailsâ (May 23, 2005). She and her family have accused the Army of lying to the country about her sonâs death to create more patriotic sentiment.
Mary Tillman is a San Jose resident and teacher at a public junior high school. She recently co-authored Boots on the Ground By Dusk: The Life and Death of Pat Tillman with Narda Zacchino.

Right is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution and Made Us All Less Safe
Nationally recognized commentator and Huffington Post Editor in Chief Arianna Huffington will address issues crucial to this yearâs presidential election. According to Huffington, the problem with the Republican Party is not that it is at odds with the views of progressives, but that its "lunatic fringe" has taken over the party and is at odds with the views of the American people. By significant majorities, Huffington asserts that Americans believe in the science of evolution, don't want Roe v. Wade overturned and don't want to ignore global warming. Moreover, they do want good health care for their children and do want to bring the troops home from Iraq. "Flashing back to the Reagan era is one thing," says Huffington, "but flashing back to the Dark Ages is quite another."
Since 1996 Huffington has penned her nationally syndicated on-line column focusing on key social, economic, and environmental issues, and is the co-host of NPRâs Left, Right, and Center, a political roundtable program. The former Republican has evolved into what she calls "a compassionate and progressive populist." Huffington is the bestselling author of twelve books on topics ranging from the changing roles of women, to the power of myths as guides, to forgotten dimensions of life and ourselves. In 2006, she was named one of the worldâs one hundred most influential people by Time magazine, in addition to being dubbed one of Washington's most influential commentators by Newsweek and People magazine. Originally from Greece, Huffington received her M.A. in economics from Cambridge University.

The Spirit of Democracy
Larry Diamond, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution; Professor, Center
on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, Stanford University
In 1974, nearly three-quarters of all countries
were dictatorships; today, more than
half are democracies. Diamond contends,
however, that recent efforts to promote
democracy have stumbled and that many
democratic governments are faltering. He
explains that the desire for democracy
runs deep, even in very poor countries,
and proposes that even entrenched regimes
like Iran and China could become
democracies within a generation.
