Free Resource (#525) - March 26th, 2008
Today's Resource of the Day

Zencast has been offering Zen Buddhism teachings on podcast for almost three years now and the great thing is they've kept all their podcasts up on their feed so each of them can still be downloaded.

Included on this feed is an unabridged recording of the key Buddhist text The Dhammapada translated and read by Zencast host Gil Fronsdal. Fronsdal also teaches a five part "Introduction to Meditation" class. Other frequent speakers on Zencast include Thich Nhat Hanh and Eckhart Tolle. Latest on the feed is a Mindfulness Meditation Course. These podcasts are essential listening for anyone looking to learn more about Zen Buddhism.

Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced pronounced Tick-Naught-Han) is not only one of the most famous Zen masters currently living, he is also venerated the world over for his poetry, and fervent peace activism. Born in 1942 in Vietnam, Hanh felt his calling early and left home at the age of 16 to become a Buddhist Monk.

Later while teaching in the United States for a time, Hanh was called back to Vietnam by his monk-collegues due to the growing conflict in Southeast Asia. It was during the early 1960's that Hanh came to the attention of the world stage for his tireless efforts toward peace in that area of the world. This activism, based on an idealogy of pacifism, earned Hanh the attention of none other than Martin Luther King Jr, who nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967.

For more than a third of a century, Shambhala Publications has been devoted to the magic, craft, and business of books. Shambhala has specialized in books that present creative and conscious ways of transforming the individual, the society, and the planet.

The notion of translating spiritual insight into action in the world is embodied in the company's name: "Shambhala" is a legendary Central Asian kingdom that symbolizes an enlightened way of life harmonizing the inner and outer worlds. Thus, the Shambhala worldview enables them to publish in a wide variety of subject areas, including psychology and the sciences, the arts and creativity, business and economics, and health and healing. But it is religion and philosophy that remain the heart of their publishing program.

Here you'll find audio programs from teachers like Pema Chodron, Ken Wilber, Sakyong Mipham, the Dalai Lama, and Thich Nhat Hanh along with superb translations of classic spiritual works such as The Art of War, Siddhartha, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and The Way of the Bodhisattva.
